Google: Glass winners chosen; announcements to come

Google says it has picked the winners of its Glass Explorer #ifihadglass contest. The company will reveal the chosen ones by way of Google+ and Twitter over the next few days.

The contest, which kicked off Feb. 20 and ran for a week, asked people who wanted to be first to get their hands on Google's high-tech specs to submit their ideas for Glass, like so: "Using Google+ or Twitter, tell us what you would do if you had Glass, starting with the hashtag #ifihadglass."

Pitches involved everything from health care applications to skateboarding to journalism and storytelling.… Read more

Google looking for Glass Explorers

Wednesday's CNET Update does a barrel roll:

Google wants you to fall in love with the idea of a computer on your face. It has released another promo video showing what Google Glass could do (even though it's not a real product yet), and launched a contest for a chance to buy a $1,500 prototype. But as Forbes points out, people are using the #ifihadglass hashtag contest to point out the drawbacks of Glass.

Today's tech news roundup also looks at the redesign of Yahoo's home page, and the updated SwiftKey app for Android.

The Cheapskate Fifth-Anniversary Giveaway Spectacular, Round Two

What's the only thing better than a cheap deal? A freebie, of course.

As you may recall from last Friday, I'm celebrating five years as The Cheapskate. (Confession: I think it's the single longest job I've ever held. It's definitely the best.) Where, oh, where did the time go?

I don't know (I've looked everywhere, even under the couch), but I'm thrilled to have the chance to offer some great prizes during this monthlong contest-fest.… Read more

The Cheapskate Fifth-Anniversary Giveaway Spectacular, round one

It's my anniversary!

Five years ago this month (November 12, 2007, to be exact), I lucked into the best blogging job in the world. It was CNET's Matt Elliott who recommended me for the gig, Kelly Morrison who brought me onboard, and Margaret Kane who helped me through the Cheapskate's early stages. I can't thank them enough.

Of course, I'm most grateful to you, the readers. Sounds cliche, but it's true. So many people have sent me so many kind messages over the years -- words of thanks, words of support, and words of great deals for me to share! I actually keep a lot of those e-mails, referring to them when some crank tells me I'm a liar or an idiot. It's really gratifying to know that people value what I do, even more so when they reach out to tell me so.… Read more

Members only: Contest offers iPhone for smallest, um, unit

Hey guys, I hate to tell you this, but size really does matter -- at least if you're in the market for a free iPhone.

A Danish erotica site, SingleSex.dk, is promising a new Apple smartphone to the man who can verify that he possesses, let's say, the littlest groom.

"It's a competition which is at the core of manhood, the most important thing for a man," the site's owner, Morten Fabricius, told Agence France Presse. "There are so many unhappy men out there who think you have to... but it's not normal to have a huge one." … Read more

Contest: Carve a geeky pumpkin for Crave

We want to reward all the under-appreciated pumpkin artists out there by announcing the "Carve a pumpkin for Crave" contest. We're seeking the best reader-created pumpkin featuring a geeky or technology-inspired theme.

We won't judge too strictly on content (as long as it has a loose relation to tech and/or geek culture), but we wouldn't mind seeing submissions with subjects such as video game characters, sci-fi movies, techy art, and so on. As we've already seen from your Instagram photos and your entries in the biggest "Star Wars" fan contest, Crave readers have a seriously creative knack. … Read more
