Fix nonfunctional Mail PDF function in OS X Preview

Apple's Preview application is the default PDF reader, and has a number of features that make it a convenient program to use. For example, you can quickly e-mail the PDF document you're reading by choosing the "Mail Selected PDF Document" option in the File menu.

This option should work for other document types as well, but some people have been finding this feature is not working at all. When the option to mail PDFs is selected, the system just sits there without opening Mail or generating any new messages containing the PDF document.

How to stop subwoofer bass from 'leaking' into other rooms

Everyone at one time or another has been annoyed by the unpleasant bass thumps of a neighbor's subwoofer or large speakers. While midrange and high-frequency sounds are more easily enclosed by walls, low bass frequencies pass right through them. And, of course, it's not just a noise problem from neighbors; home-theater bass can disturb other family members within a house or apartment.

Methods used to isolate or restrict bass from going through walls, floors, and ceilings can get expensive, and unless recording-studio construction techniques are employed bass is hard to control. Brick and concrete are more effective than … Read more

BP suffers snag in oil containment effort

Reuters

BP suffered a setback on Saturday in an attempt to contain oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico with a metal box when crystallized gas filled the structure, a blow to hopes of a quick, temporary solution to a growing disaster.

BP engineers have moved the four-story containment dome, which was seen as the best short-term way to stem the flow from a ruptured oil well, off to the side on the sea floor. They plan to come up with a solution in the next two days, Doug Suttles, BP's chief operating officer, told reporters.

Fun food containers brighten up your lunchbag

Packing lunch for your kids--or yourself--every day can get a little boring. But you can spice things up a bit and have some fun with these atomic food containers.

You probably won't convince anyone that your lunch is truly radioactive, but you'll at least have the most recognizable containers in the office, so Kevin from accounting can't claim he "accidentally" grabbed your leftover pad thai.

And despite the warnings emblazoned on the bowls, they're dishwasher- and microwave-safe. They even include a built-in air vent and date timer, so you probably won't poison yourself … Read more

Three lessons from the shipping container

As human beings we like analogies. Admittedly, we sometimes overextend them and end up obfuscating rather than clarifying. Such is arguably the case with cloud computing and the electric grid. However, a good analogy can not only make the new and unfamiliar more comprehensible but can even bring fresh insights based on history and past patterns.

Many of you are probably familiar with the computing-in-shipping-containers theme that Sun most popularized but that a variety of vendors has picked up on in various forms. The idea is that a shipping container is the largest thing that can be easily transported around … Read more

Bake and store in one container

On top of all the other dishes that I dirty when I'm baking, I almost always have to get out a fresh container to store food for later, along with any leftovers. That's just one more thing I'll have to wash down the road. However, Anchor Hocking has a line of containers that let you bake in the same dish you'll use to store food in--some are even large enough that you can do all of your mixing in the same container. The Bake n' Keep Food Storage Containers are glass, including the lids. They're … Read more

A burger in hand, three in the freezer

There are few foods that stack up against a good ol' hamburger. There are even fewer foods (tuna salad does come to mind) that benefit more from homemade customization. While ordering a burger from your favorite burger joint may be great, there is no comparison to having one made just the way you like it. You get to put in the mix exactly what you want, from onions to green peppers, with only your pantry (and imagination) limiting the type of toppings to pile on to your personal creation.

Whether you enjoy them fried or grilled, first you gotta make '… Read more
