Behold your phone lock screen as branded billboard

Can your lock screen act as a virtual billboard of sorts?

That's what one company is banking on with a new product it plans to unveil in the coming weeks. Web and mobile software company Conduit has over the past month experimented with a custom Android lock screen that can hop directly into different applications. The next step is to offer branded lock screens built around companies that deliver constantly updated information such as news, sports, or weather.

The result: a lock screen carrying the brand of a sports network or news channel that users would see every time … Read more

DIY apps: The democratization of the app world

Deborah Moncure and her app bring a new spin to the notion of a "Jesus Phone."

When Moncure, who works for the Central Baptist Church in St. Louis, Mo., was looking around last year for a way to get information out about the church's schedule and activities, she initially sought to upgrade her Web site. But upon realizing the number of parishioners--and younger potential parishioners--carrying smartphones, she opted to build an app instead.

But the fee for getting an app placed in the Apple App Store and Android was a little too high for a nonprofit. Moncure … Read more

Didmo: One way to get your small-business apps discovered

With apps all the rage, small businesses want to get in on the action too. But it's anything but easy.

Relatively few small companies have the resources to build and market their own apps. I've written about services that offer the ability to quickly and easily put together a smartphone app. Now one of those companies, Didmo, is offering a way to get the word out on its newly created app.

Last week, Didmo unveiled a partnership with Constant Contact, an email marketing services provider, which could potentially help answer the issue of discoverability.

Didmo's Magmito platform … Read more

It's actually not hard. There are a number of companies that offer the ability to create your own app for a minimal fee, which is great for small businesses looking to stay relevant in this increasingly mobile world. Or if you just have a lot of time on your hands.

Is The Conduit the Wii's best shooter?

One of the bigger pushes for Nintendo's Wii console recently has been The Conduit, a sci-fi first-person shooter from Sega. Looking past the hype, we put it to the test--hoping to find out if the popular Wii is actually good for something other than casual, party, and kids' games.

As with the recent Ghostbusters debate, our CNET editors' gaming roundtable gives conflicting opinions below, and we naturally want to hear what you think in the handy comments section.

Jeff Bakalar: We're really impressed at how customizable the game is. In addition to completely changing the controls around, you have the option to move around individual HUD (heads-up-display) items at your leisure, so you can build the presentation that's right for you.

Control-wise, the game performs very smoothly, just how you'd want a first-person-shooter on the Wii to play. It's refreshing to see a game like this built from the ground up specifically for the Wii--you'll notice little things like rack focusing and other camera tricks that aren't seen in most Wii games.… Read more

Now that the Nintendo E3 2009 press conference is behind us, let's take a look at some of the game announcements for the Wii. While we saw a few titles we were expecting, there were a couple that came as total surprises.

Right out of the gate, we got to see a brand-new 2D Mario Bros. game for the Wii. New Super Mario Bros. will allow for four-player co-op playing and will feature new game characters and power ups.

SF New Tech picks: Lunch-o-tron meets comment-o-meter

I'm at the San Francisco New Tech Meetup tonight, immersed in Web 2.0 startupville. Tonight's lineup of pitches:

Conduit. A utility for making toolbars to go with your blog or site. We recently covered the tool's new capability that lets the user swap between different toolbars they've installed. The concept is interesting: It lets site publishers put their sites into toolbars. I didn't expect users to take up this idea, but the company's executives report strong growth and more than 12 million users.

SezWho. This is an interesting system that allows users to … Read more

Conduit improves its toolbar

Conduit makes a slick utility for creating browser toolbars. I covered the product back in April, and I had one main beef: Each toolbar you installed took up additional real estate in a browser. Conduit has just fixed that, and has added some other new features as well.

With today's release, when Conduit users add toolbars after the first one they have, each becomes an option on a drop-down item within the toolbar. Conduit is also releasing multitoolbar packs with preloaded combinations of toolbars. There's a Blogs pack (Webware is included in it) as well as Music, Sports, … Read more

Go toolbar crazy with Conduit

Here's a way to maybe keep your audience engaged with your Web site even when they're not on it: offer them a branded browser toolbar. Conduit's newish Community Toolbar feature makes it easy to build a toolbar (for free) that you can offer to your site visitors (also for free).

When I heard about this I thought, Great, just what we need: more toolbar clutter. Also, we have experience at CNET with toolbar downloads. For us, they weren't worth the development time. Conduit is a little different, though. Regarding clutter, you're only supposed to get … Read more
