Internet Explorer has been facing growing competition from rival browsers, but it's still the leader with more than 50 percent of the market, according to Net Applications.

IE grabbed a 54 percent market share last month, down from 56.7 percent a year ago. Traveling further back in time reveals an ongoing decline from November 2007 when Microsoft held almost 80 percent of the desktop browser market.

Released on Tuesday but available only since yesterday, the new mobile version is the top free app in both the iPhone and iPad categories. Google created dedicated versions for both devices, so iPad users running the browser can take advantage of the tablet's ample 9.7-inch screen.

Google just found another digital billboard for online ads: its Chrome Web browser.

I just started noticing the ads on one of my computers yesterday, and I'm not the only one to see them. Right now, the ads tout Google's Chrome OS-powered Chromebooks, which not coincidentally happen to be on sale for the holidays.

The ads don't interrupt ordinary Web browsing by pushing aside Web page content and don't compete with regular Web page ads. Rather, they appear in a yellow-tinted box at the top of the new-tab page in Chrome.

Google doesn't like it when Chrome behaves differently for a person using multiple installations of the browser, so the company lets people synchronize a gradually broader collection of browser settings using its account settings stored on the Net.
