Samsung, EA team up for mobile apps initiative

Samsung and Electronic Arts-owned mobile game publishing house Chilliingo have signed a deal aimed at increasing the number of apps delivered to Samsung's application marketplace.

The program is called 100% Indie and is a joint venture between Chillingo and Samsung. The initiative gets its name from the surprisingly attractive deal the companies are offering developers: 100 percent of the revenue earned from their applications in Samsung Apps for the first six months they're available. After that, developers will need to hand over 10 percent of the revenue. That share grows to 20 percent and finally 30 percent in … Read more

Liquid physics games for iOS

I often write about action games in my collections, and it's no secret I'm a fan of the racing-game genre as well. But another genre I like to play while on my commute is mind-twisting puzzle games. A new game was released a few days ago that has jumped to the top of the charts at iTunes App Store and it has all the bells and whistles to remain a hit.

Though puzzle games come in a lot of different forms, one of my favorite types is those that use realistic physics. Some of the best I have come across use liquid physics and require you to experiment in order to solve each puzzle.… Read more

Electronic Arts to acquire Angry Birds publisher

Electronic Arts is acquiring Angry Birds publisher Chillingo, the company confirmed to Reuters today.

According to the report, EA is buying Chillingo for under $20 million. However, an EA spokesperson, who told Reuters that the acquisition would help the company increase its "market leadership on the Apple platform," would not disclose financial terms of the deal.

Chillingo is a major player in the mobile-gaming space. The company publishes Rovio's Angry Birds, which is one of the top-selling titles of all time in Apple's App Store. It also publishers several other games, including Cut the Rope, Robin … Read more

Wear a cool trench coat and blast vampires

Load your shotgun, put on your trench coat, and find your best black hat. The first thing you notice about Vampire Origins HD for iPad ($4.99) is the great artistic style and smooth UI. Chillingo (makers of InkVaders HD and Angry Birds) seems to have a great eye for design, but in the case of VOHD, game writing does not appear to be a priority.

Despite the coolness of the hero character, Vincent, and the fact that you get to destroy plenty of vampires, transitional screen graphics contain less-than-inspired prose. Add the lackluster variety in the gameplay and Vampire … Read more

Blast aliens in a notebook

Simplicity is the name of the game in this side-scrolling, alien-blasting, shooter from Chillingo. The unique artistic style of InkVaders HD takes advantage of iPad's amazing screen, combining retro-inspired "doodle chic" animation and live-action hand interactions.

In this game, you get to use three different weapon styles--futuristic energy guns, everyday physical attacks, and the always exciting grenade launchers--to guide Generic Marine (or G, to his friends) in his quest to destroy Martians left and right. InkVaders HD has an easy-to-blast interface, which means you'll be working your way through aliens in no time.

Three play modes (… Read more

Vampire Origins HD: Wear a cool trench coat, blast vampires

Load your shotgun, put on your trench coat, and find your best black hat. Vampire Origins HD combines slick design and hardcore vampire-blasting action, but it falls short of great because of poor writing and repetitive game play.

InkVaders HD: Blast aliens on your spiral-bound notebook

If you ever sat in third grade math class imagining that the doodles covering your spiral-bound notebook could come to life, InkVaders HD for iPad is for you.

Find concerts easily and enter a boxing ring: iPhone apps of the week

I went to Portland, Oregon, to visit my parents last week and had a great time spending time with my family and checking out the local breakfast spots. I even found new places to explore (thanks to my trusty iPhone). One thing I knew going up there is that my father and his girlfriend had already bought two iPhone 3GS phones and I would not be hearing the end of how much better theirs were than my year-old iPhone 3G. But my mother and stepdad live up in Portland too, and once they saw how cool and fun my iPhone … Read more
