Transforming scale looks you in the eye

Baking can be a furious endeavor. Throw a cook into a fully stocked kitchen with a set of measuring tools and anything can happen. That doesn't mean everything has to happen, though. Any chef could live without the spills and the messes that inevitably occur from trying to use something that was designed for another purpose. Worse yet is when a commonly used item gets in the way.

Baking scales, like any other piece of kitchen equipment, are only as useful as far as they can be used. Sounds simple enough, but all too often utility is lost due … Read more

With space, vacuum sealer makes some noise

Cluttered kitchen countertops don't exactly scream out for new gadgetry. Even when the learning curve is small, space may simply be an issue. So when an interesting appliance comes along, sometimes it can fall upon deaf ears. Change it up and make it into a form factor that can be held in the hand and suddenly people might start to listen.

For many, the concept of a vacuum sealer is sound, but the space the large, blocky appliance normally requires makes it a no-go. The Caso Hand Held Vacuum Sealer features a rechargeable battery and cordless operation. Docking into … Read more

Staring with the (wine) refrigerator door open

One of the great mysteries in life is knowing what you want out of the fridge before you open it. This is not a food-specific dilemma: the same conundrum can and does occur when contemplating a wine selection. While it may be easy (or not) to decide upon red or white, deciding upon which red or white is another story entirely. It is something that we as a society have learned to live with. And as with other resignations, we try to make up for it by doing the little things.

Since it is apparent that the practice of open-door … Read more

Folding scale transforms into a clock

The design of appliances and gadgets in the kitchen tend to play a bit of follow the leader; most things look alike. When comparing a food processor with another food processor, chances are they share similar attributes. Practitioners of industrial design try to overcome these commonalities, but more often than not the end product doesn't reflect these goals. It's not easy to turn a piece of kitchen gear into a new work featuring striking design. Which is probably for the best, as it is kind of helpful to know what the gadget is before you grab it. But … Read more

Vacuum sealer seals in the future

Somewhere along the line, our idea of futuristic space-age culinary options got off track. Thankfully, here in 2010, we aren't all surviving off of food in pill form, but other good (or at least more delicious) ideas still have not come to fruition. We may not yet have the Black & Decker Hydrator from "Back to the Future," or the liquefied meal (including fish!) served on the moon shuttle in "2001: A Space Odyssey," but at least we have sous vide cooking.

Innovative cooking methods and innovative food storage solutions may not seem like they … Read more

Portable induction burner expands the stovetop

Kitchen countertops not only have a way of becoming overcrowded quite quickly, but they also lack the capability to expand outside of their boundaries. Not so with the stovetop. When those four burners become filled up with boiling water and busy fry pans, there is another option. Although nowadays, a portable burner can be so much more.

The Caso C21 Induction Burner fills the much appreciated duties of a "fifth burner," but it also does so with efficiency and style. Since induction cooking uses the pot or pan directly as the heat generator, more heat is transferred to … Read more
