Viva la revolucion! Mercedes channels Che Guevara for car tech

They said it, not me.

"Some colleagues still think that car-sharing borders on communism," Mercedes-Benz Chairman of the Board of Management Dieter Zetsche said onstage at CES today, speaking about Mercedes' new CarTogether initiative. "But if that's the case, viva la revolucion!"

To be sure, a luxury-car maker like Mercedes is not actually promoting communism. But during his CES talk, Zetsche pushed hard on a vision that the company has for a greener future that allows drivers to reduce emissions by using connected and social technology to easily find compatible passengers to share rides with. … Read more

Behind the wheel with RelayRides (video)

Move over, Zipcar. There's a new car-sharing service in town.

It's RelayRides, which is looking to cut into Zipcar's market share. Unlike Zipcar, where you rent from the company, Relay Rides sets you up to borrow a car from a person who lives near you. SmartPlanet talks to Shelby Clark, founder of the company about his business and how it works.

The so-called AirBnB of car sharing seems to be taking a lesson from the recent apartment rental debacle and will add new security controls. Car2Go expands car-sharing program, but not in time for SXSW

Timed almost perfectly to avoid the swarms of tourists that will descend upon the city for the weeklong SXSW, Daimler's car-sharing program Car2Go will expand its service area and add more cars to its fleet in downtown Austin.

Car2Go is a lot like ZipCar with the difference that its rental fleet consists entirely of Smart ForTwos that you can rent by the minute. Another differentiating perk is that you don't have to return vehicles to the same location where you picked them up--you can drop off a rental in any valid and publicly accessible parking space. But starting … Read more
