Trying to lose weight? Breathe into this gadget

Did you indulge at the Super Bowl party last night? Maybe you're still trying to work off the excesses of the holidays. Well, here's a dieting tool that's quite breathtaking -- literally.

Created by four Ph.Ds, mostly from Arizona State University, Breezing is a portable device that measures your metabolism using a method called indirect calorimetry. It analyzes your rates of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production.

You breathe into the mouse-size gadget that contains a sensor cartridge. It gauges your resting energy expenditure (REE), the metabolic rate indicating how quickly you're burning calories at rest. If you're trying to slim down, the faster the better. … Read more

AT&T quietly releases Pantech Breeze III

The Pantech Breeze III made an appearance on AT&T's online store today, and it looks to be a slight update over the Pantech Breeze II.

Improvements include more-advanced voice recognition, better sound quality thanks to a new background noise suppression technology, a pill reminder feature, and more. The overall design looks to be the same, however, with that same flip-phone design and the three speed-dial keys underneath the main display.

The Breeze series of phones has typically targeted senior citizens or those who might have trouble using more complicated cell phones. It has both an easy and advanced mode, and has big keys, a bright display, and large fonts.

A few extras include 3G speeds, a camera, a microSD card slot, and even a music player. The Breeze III is available for $49 after a two-year agreement and a $50 mail-in rebate.… Read more

Sync me

Synchronizing files and folders between your work and home PCs, desktop and laptop, and portable and permanent storage can be a hassle. A lot of users procrastinate and end up doing a lousy job of it. If they had a free synchronization tool like SyncBreeze, they could not only make an easy job of synchronizing folders and files between directories, disks, and even networked computers, but also help you keep your stuff in sync.

SyncBreeze has a simple but elegant layout, with clearly labeled icons grouped by function. The online Help site includes a PDF-based user's manual we were … Read more

AOC Breeze Android tablet, under $200, has USB 2.0

Apple's iPad has a lot of things going for it, but ports aren't one of them. The ever-more-crowded tablet landscape is getting a number of intriguing Android products, and the AOC Breeze 8-inch tablet, announced this morning, is yet another one. What the 8-inch Android 2.1-running device does have of note is a full USB 2.0 port. Another advantage: it costs less than $200.

An 800x600-pixel display, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, 4GB of flash memory, Rockchip processor, and microSD card slot aren't exciting, and the system doesn't really stand out at first glance, … Read more

Cluttered interface

Video and audio fans can capture and manipulate files in a variety of ways with this application, which offers a strong array of capabilities, but novices will be intimidated by the cluttered interface.

Breeze Standard Edition launches a medium-size window that--surrounding the video-viewing pane--is cluttered with buttons, icons and fields. Nothing about this application is designed for novices, for its design is not intuitive, and the Help feature, while it presents a lot of detail about the app's features, doesn't include a tutorial that would most benefit new users. That caveat aside, the app performed well in our … Read more

BreezeDry: Air-dry your laundry, indoors

When young we learn at an astonishing rate. Soon after we learn about Mother's Day, we learn about Father's Day. The next logical thought in the process is to ask when "Kid's Day" is. The answer I always got was short, simple, and true: "Every day is Kid's Day." The recent Earth Day makes me think of this answer, and the realization that truly every day is Earth Day.

Here's a concept I really like: a self-enclosed drying cabinet for clothes right out of the wash. The BreezeDry ambient drying cabinet … Read more

Pantech Breeze now in black

The super basic Pantech Breeze from AT&T is available in basic black starting Wednesday.

Slated as a phone for seniors, the Breeze is great for anyone who wants a simple phone for making calls and not much else. Both black and white versions have a VGA camera and three one-touch quick call keys for your convenience, and both are available for $29.99 each with a two-year service agreement.

Pantech Breeze should be a breeze to use

Today AT&T and Pantech announced the Pantech Breeze, an entry-level handset designed for an older audience.

Not only does it have a clean and simple interface, it has three dedicated speed dial/quick-call keys right underneath the display, a bright screen with big fonts, oversized buttons with tactile clicks, an option to have audible keystrokes, a loud speakerphone, and even a basic and easy-to-use camera.

And at $49.99, it's a deal even for us young whippersnappers.

Pool-cleaning robot powered by the sun

It may not be long before solar-powered bots are taking care of all our household chores. Already we've seen robotic lawnmowers get powered by the sun, and now pool cleaners are going solar too.

The "Solar Breeze" is apparently the first pool-skimming robot of its kind, capturing ultraviolet rays with two panels and storing the energy in its rechargeable batteries. It requires no electrical connections and "never stops working," according to its Web site. The bot is also capable of dispensing chlorine as it cleans, though it should be noted that another solar product, the &… Read more
