Potluck takes the stigma out of talking to strangers online

Josh Miller is hosting a house party for the Internet and everyone is invited. The party, called Potluck, starts now and its purpose is to introduce today's generation of social networkers to people beyond their immediate friend circles.

"Most people ... have always known the Internet as a place where you only connect with people you know," Miller told CNET. "So how do we encourage them to connect with new people?"

The answer is Potluck, a social application for meeting strangers in a non-threatening environment. Actually, though, it's just a fun place to hang out … Read more

Evan Williams: A mogul in Internet publishing

NEW YORK -- Twitter and Medium co-founder Evan Williams loved reading magazines growing up in rural Nebraska in the pre-Internet days. It was a way to experience the world outside of Clarks, Nebraska, population 369.

"I wanted to get out of there and see the bigger world. [Clarks] is not a bad place to be, but I yearned to see the rest of the world," Williams said in conversation with Wired senior writer Steven Levy at the Wired Business Conference here.

Since leaving Nebraska for the West Coast, the 41-year-old serial entrepreneur has become one the Internet's … Read more

Startup firm BranchOut trying to out-link LinkedIn

Startup firm BranchOut offers a professional social network that its CEO asserts could outdo LinkedIn with greater exposure and the right amount of cash.

BranchOut serves a mission similar to that of LinkedIn -- to help people find jobs and network with colleagues. But BranchOut is a bit different in that it's available strictly as a Facebook app rather than as a standalone Web site.

Some may see that as a limiting factor, but not CEO Rick Marini. BranchOut's chief executive told Business Insider that he thinks the exposure to Facebook's 850 million users could give it … Read more

Make your own tree-branch iPod dock

Chris over at Manmadediy.com says he noticed one item pop up on lots of lists of his fellow design and DIY bloggers: the Enchanted Woods iPhone Dock from Anthropologie. He describes it as "a fun nature-meets-technology way to stand and display your iPod or iPhone."

While he thought it was "awesome," at nearly $100, it seemed like a lot to pay for something that didn't have "speakers, a clock, or even a way to plug it into the wall." But more importantly, because it was 100 percent wood and didn't "… Read more

Technical details remain light in supermarket data breach

Details remain sketchy regarding Monday's announcement of 4.2 million credit card and debit cards exposed at a Maine-based supermarket chain. However, public comments made by Ronald Hodge, CEO of Hannaford Supermarkets, suggest that even with recent improvements in payment card transaction security, there may be holes.

The standards organization, PCI Security Standards International, was founded by American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB, MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa International. In October 2007, they implemented the PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), which includes, among other things, network specifications.
