How injectable nanogel could help fight diabetes

For diabetics who have to constantly manage their blood-sugar levels, insulin works. The problem is, many people with Type 1 diabetes have to prick their fingers multiple times a day to monitor their levels, and inject themselves with insulin when those levels are too high. And they don't always administer the right amount at the right time.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston Children's Hospital hope to automate insulin delivery with a novel nanotech approach that involves injecting a gel that detects blood-sugar levels and secretes insulin when needed -- with a single injection doing do the trick for as many as 10 days.… Read more

Watch this Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon live short

Blood Dragon is a rather bizarre game expansion for Far Cry 3, combining the plot and scripting of an '80s action film with the voice talents of actor Micheal Biehn.

This five-minute short film is set in the word of Blood Dragon and features robot ninjas, cyborg soldiers, and a nuclear explosion.

That's everything you need to know. … Read more

Challenging gladiatorial combat truly leads to Blood & Glory

With a name like Blood & Glory you probably are not expecting a family-oriented casual game. And you'd be right. If you've enjoyed the TV series Spartacus, then Blood & Glory will appeal to you. It's based around gladiatorial combat in which you battle in the arena to the death, all for the glory and adulation of the crowds. Blood & Glory installs quickly.

Graphically, Blood & Glory is a treat. The graphics are well done, but a warning that there is a huge amount of blood (hence the name!) would be tame. This is probably the … Read more

Hot games optimized for iPhone 5

Now that you have your iPhone 5, you've probably noticed that not all apps take advantage of the wider screen. I've been noticing that the updates have been pouring in fairly quickly, but unfortunately, I still have a lot of pillarboxed apps and games that show black spaces on each side.

For this week's collection I put together three games that look absolutely fantastic on the iPhone 5's larger display. The first is the latest in a popular arcade-style racing franchise and gives you more viewing area as you blaze around the track. The second is an action RPG that pits you against demonic beasts as you hack and slash your way to saving a kidnapped queen. The last is the newest version of a popular soccer series that might be the best sports game available on iOS.… Read more

Unleash your gladiator-self

While Blood & Glory: Legend resembles Infinity Blade in some respects, its well-designed user interface and great graphics and storyline enhance the overall user experience. Given the fact that it is free, anyone who liked the app's predecessor, Blood & Glory, will surely enjoy the enhanced game. Still, we found that the game doesn't quite differ enough from the previous version.

We like games that have a story, and the developers of Legend have given users a reason to kill all those monster competitors besides staying alive. The game has a central figure, Crimson, who has to pass … Read more

Eliminate your enemy

Inspired by the game Infinity Blade, Glu's free app, Blood & Glory, feels like a clone following the "it works so let's do it" recipe, as it places the user into a one-on-one arena fight as a gladiator, without giving any specific reason why. Putting the similarities aside, the user experience is greatly enhanced by the great graphics and on-screen help that assists novice users in getting started.

Blood & Glory takes the combat scene right into the Coliseum of Rome, which makes it different from the popular Infinity Blade. However, those who played the latter … Read more

The 404 and The Walking Dead Escape

Without a doubt the highlight of our trip to Comic-Con was The Walking Dead Escape takeover of Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres.

Spanning across multiple levels of the stadium, the 45-minute obstacle course led us through a zombie-filled apocalyptic simulation where "survivors" must outrun the living dead or become infected themselves.

This event was no joke. We were told to stretch out before, wear gym clothes, and be sure to not leave anyone behind. Armed with our head- and chest-mounted GoPros, we documented the entire experience. Of course, not everyone could survive. So who made … Read more

How to keep your iPad free of bodily fluids

I like to think I'm no germaphobe, but when I was recently handed an iPad whose screen was littered with smudgy fingerprints, a little voice inside my head stopped talking and started choking. I couldn't help but imagine what pathogens were thriving on that surface.

Enter the AirStrap Med, an iPad case designed by and for health care workers but well-suited to the germ-wary as well.

The $89.99 case, released this month by Griffin, is made of a two-piece polycarbonate and silicone frame that snaps around the iPad (also compatible with iPad 2) in such a way … Read more

Stein of Science: Liquid nitrogen-grade booze container

Meet Funranium Labs founder Phil Broughton.

He's a radiation safety specialist at the University of California at Berkeley. He was once a cryogenics technician for the Amundsen-Scott South Pole scientific research station. He's really into coffee and beer and finding the best way to deliver those products into his system, and he has boldly offered himself up as a guinea pig for science by personally testing and developing products for discerning geek customers.

Let's start with the Stein of Science. Each stein is crafted from a bench top liquid nitrogen dewar flask. That means it will keep your beer frosty cold for quite a long time. That also means it's not cheap. A 655-milliliter Stein of Science costs $230. Your fellow lab rats will be insanely jealous when you show up to the next party with one of these bad boys.… Read more
