Bill Gates' reported $8.7M Florida equestrian estate

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is putting down roots in Florida, according to the blog Gossip Extra.

A trust called the Mallet Hill Trust is linked to Gates through one of the trustees, Bill McCaughan, Gossip Extra reported last week. McCaughan is a partner at the Miami branch of the Seattle-based K&L Gates law firm founded by Gates' father. Mallet Hill Trust is named as the buyer of the property which was recently purchased for $8.7 million in cash.

That's pocket change for Bill Gates, who as the richest American, is worth around $66 billion.

Bill Gates crowned world's richest person, once again

It looks like telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim has lost his grip on the title of world's richest person.

And who to fill his shoes? None other than Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

With a $72.7 billion fortune, Gates is now $550 million ahead of Slim (who has a net worth of $72.1 billion), according to Bloomberg. This is the first time Gates has earned the biggest billionaire status since 2007.

Facebook and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have joined forces again to help develop more tech tools for education and learning. It's time for HackEd 2.0.

The tech giants will be hosting two all-day hackathons this month, a Facebook spokesperson told CNET. More than 20 teams of tech education enthusiasts, education experts, and top-notch developers will spend April 9 at Facebook's Menlo Park headquarters brainstorming, coding, and building apps. Gates Foundation offers $100k for 'next-gen condom'

We're not quite sure what a next-generation condom would look like (gesture control? a tiny touch screen?), but we may find out sooner rather than later if the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation succeeds in its new quest.

The foundation is seeking new ideas that improve on condom design, which it describes as having seen "very little technological improvement in the last 50 years." The winning proposal gets a cool $100,000, and could potentially earn more in additional funding.

The foundation suggests that if a redesigned condom could enhance a sexual experience and not detract from it, more men would use one, therefore reducing disease transmission, unwanted pregnancies, and so on. The request also seeks ideas "that increase ease-of-use for male and female condoms, for example better packaging or designs that are easier to properly apply. In addition, attributes that address and overcome cultural barriers are also desired." … Read more
