FBI investigating how sensitive celebrity data landed on Web

Some hacker or hackers has it out for a handful of celebrities, politicians, and law enforcement officials, including First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and pop singer Beyonce.

Collected onto one Web site -- called "The Secret Files" -- is a slew of financial and personal information on these public figures. The data is so sensitive that it has sparked investigations by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced yesterday that the government agencies are looking into how www.exposed.su obtained the Social Security numbers, credit reports, telephone … Read more

Facebook: Ravens' win, Beyonce most mentioned for Super Bowl

The Ravens win, Beyonce, and the blackout topped the list of the Super Bowl's most talked-about moments on Facebook, the social networking giant said today.

And even though the San Francisco 49ers lost the game, head coach Jim Harbaugh received 98 percent more overall mentions in posts and comments than his brother and Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh.

Mentions of Beyonce, who performed at halftime, started to increase just before 8 p.m. ET. By 8:22 p.m., mentions of her name had jumped nearly 49,000 percent, Facebook said. Destiny's Child's appearance with Beyonce was … Read more

Mastering music in the age of iTunes

I recently chatted with mastering engineer Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound in NYC. He mastered Beyonce's "Live at Roseland: Elements of 4," Iron Maiden's "Flight 666" DVD, and James Taylor's "One Man Band," so you can see he's a pretty versatile engineer. When he was a kid the sound of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" turned him around, and the first Guns 'n' Roses album made a big impression.

My first question was simply this, "Does the process start as soon as you hear the album for the … Read more

Too busy to keep up with the tech news? Here are some of the more interesting stories from CNET News for Tuesday, August 30.

Apple wants its prototype 3G MacBook back. A North Carolina man has it now, after he bought it off Craigslist. CNET's Josh Lowensohn writes: "Beneath the notebook's metal frame was a slot for a SIM card and on the lid was an external antenna, suggesting Apple was testing built-in cellular networking in its notebook computers right around the time the first iPhones were hitting store shelves."

Beyoncé pregnancy spurs tweets-per-second record

Hurricane Irene might have wreaked havoc on the East Coast over the weekend, but it wasn't powerful enough to overcome Beyoncé's pregnancy announcement.

At its peak, Hurricane Irene found itself the topic of 3,000 tweets per second on Saturday. Pop diva Beyoncé Knowles' big news Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards, however, was included in a peak of 8,868 tweets per second, according to Twitter.

With that many tweets tallied per second, Beyoncé's pregnancy has become the biggest event on Twitter, beating out the former tweets-per-second leader, the Women's … Read more

The 404 424: Where we interrupt Natali Del Conte's acceptance speech

Fresh from San Francisco where she was covering last week's Apple announcements, Natali Del Conte joins us on the today's pop-culture-y episode.

Of course, the big Twitter and Facebook news of the day is Kanye West's unwelcome outburst at last night's MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) show. The producer slash performer just can't seem to keep his head above water. In case you haven't heard, Kanye rudely interrupted Taylor Swift's award acceptance speech to announce that Beyonce should have won for her "Single Ladies" video. Whether that's true or not (some of us think it is), the millions of Tweets and status updates indicate that the public isn't on his side, despite his half-hearted apology that someone should probably post on this Web site.

Speaking of celebrity freak-outs, Serena Williams has her own apologizing to do, but this time it's to a line woman who became the object of her public outburst after a call was made in Serena's error. The charitable Williams, albeit unsatisfied with the result of the match, managed to keep her composure and must have thought the woman looked a little hungry, because she offered to feed her a tennis ball down the esophagus. She politely declined the meal. Watch the disaster unfold.

Finally, we do actually have some good news to report today: Captain EO is making its triumphant return to Disneyland! Even though the classic 80s movie has already made its way to YouTube, watching it on a computer doesn't even compare to wearing those cheesy pink 3D glasses and watching it in a giant theater with all the physical effects. We're not sure what changes are in store for the film, but rest assured that you'll be the first to know once we get more info.

Unfortunately, no Calls from the Public segment today because, well, we didn't get any! None that were good, anyway. So give us a call and tell us how much you like/love/hate/despise the show. You know how it works- call 1-866-404-CNET and you might get played on the air. We also accept e-mail submissions (preferably of you holding a 404 sign or something) like the one we received from our buddies Ammi and Samri in Sweden over the weekend. Send 'em our way at the404(at)CNET[dot]com.

Jessica Biel most 'dangerous' celeb in cyberspace

Fans searching online for Biel have a one-in-five chance of hitting a Web site with malware, according to McAfee's third annual report listing Hollywood's most "dangerous" online celebrities.

In general, hunting for Hollywood's in-crowd poses a much greater threat than searching for just about anyone else. For example, President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama ranked No. 34 and No. 39, respectively.

Other unsafe celebrities near the top of the cybersecurity company's list include singer Beyonce … Read more

A burning mystery has finally been solved. It's been seven long months since we first learned of Beyonce's Samsung marketing deal after paparrazi caught her filming a commercial in New York. We knew that she was featuring a mobile phone but couldn't tell which one it was.

But relief came our way this morning when the company announced Beyonce's limited-edition handset (PDF) and released photos of said phone, which intrepid Craver Kent German immediately identified as Samsung's UpStage SPH-M620. The burgendy and gold "B'Phone," as it's been christened, has many standard … Read more
