Help me torture test the rugged Bear Grylls Android phone

You've seen plenty of torture tests of the most popular phones, like the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4, but what about a smartphone that was actually designed to take such abuse? I'm looking for your help in crowdsourcing a torturous regime to impose on a device that, in my estimation, is just asking for it.

I've got my hands on a Kyocera Torque, which is a $100 Android phone on Sprint's 4G network -- it's been endorsed by TV survivalist Bear Grylls for its rugged design, which meets military standards for dust, shock, extreme … Read more

The 404 1,276: Where we follow Justin into the darkness (podcast)

We're taking a different approach to the show today with a story from Memorial Day that takes the entire episode, but trust us--it's worth it. It's a tale of survival, of tech failure and success, the power of nature, and a tightrope walk above surefire doom. What's the closest you've ever come to the end? This is mine.

After you're done with the story, this is the Fenix LED flashlight that got me through the night and this is the SLX Extreme Snow Lizard case that kept me safe.… Read more

Team up for fun with Battle Bears Royale

Battle Bears Royale is a multiplayer shooter game that teams you up to take out other players while navigating through multilevel maps. Don't be fooled by the cute, cuddly characters in Battle Bears Royale; this multiplayer game has tough but enthralling gameplay.

Right after you download Battle Bears Royale, beware of the pop-up windows that try to get you to play other games in the so-called network. This didn't make for a good first impression on our end. Be sure to press "Skip" to proceed with the actual game.

Watch now: Texting man ambushed by bear

What would you do if you unexpectedly came face to face with a bear in your neighborhood? One distracted fellow briefly asked himself that very question while composing a text.

With helicopters buzzing overhead as they followed the bear, La Crescenta, Calif., resident Vaz Terdandenyan awoke from his slumber yesterday morning due to the noise, he told KTLA.

While texting his boss saying the commotion could cause him a late arrival to work, Terdandenyan encountered the 400-pound black bear slowly lumbering toward him in the alleyway adjacent to his home. With the bear just feet away, the man turned on his heels and ran to safety. … Read more

Compete in summer games that are almost impossible

With almost 550,000 active apps in the iTunes App Store, you get plenty of variation, and one developer continues to release games that are downright silly.

Many iPhone gamers will probably remember Justin Smith's Enviro-Bear 2010 (99 cents) from Captain Games. When the game came out in 2009, our Mac and iOS freelance reviewer, Paul Hughes, started the review by saying, "Enviro-Bear 2010 is part game, part joke, part art piece, and part game-design experiment." In Enviro-Bear 2010, the premise is that you are a bear getting ready to hibernate and you must drive a car … Read more
