Blu-ray and your iPhone: Not quite there yet
Last week we posted a full review of the Sony BDP-S570, the first Blu-ray player we've reviewed with the option to be controlled via an iPhone app over Wi-Fi. When we first heard of the iPhone functionality at CES 2010, we were intrigued by the idea; now that we've had significant hands-on time, we can say that the current implementation doesn't quite hit the mark, but we hope Sony continues to refine Blu-ray/iPhone functionality.
After you've downloaded the free "BD Remote" app, it needs to be configured by putting both the iPhone and BDP-S570 into "registration mode," similar to syncing a Bluetooth device. Once you've got it up and running, the app boots into the "simple remote" mode (pictured above), which lets you swipe right or left to move the cursor on the screen, and tap to confirm. It's actually a little counterintuitive, at least in "iPhone logic," since usually you swipe your finger from right to left to move to rightward on the iPhone; the same action causes the cursor to move leftward with the "BD Remote" app. There's also a slight bit of lag between your action and the menu on the TV responding; we didn't feel like it has any advantage over using the standard included remote.… Read more
Sony BDP-S570: $250 3D-ready Blu-ray player with Netflix, Wi-Fi and superfast speed
When 3D was rolled out at CES 2010, it seemed clear that 3D playback on Blu-ray players would be limited to flagship models in the $400 range. That is, until Sony announced in February that all players from the BDP-S470 up would get a 3D upgrade in the summer. 3D was commoditized before it even got started.
The Sony BDP-S570 isn't the cheapest 3D Blu-ray player from Sony (that would be the $200 BDP-S470), but it's the only model in its price range to offer 3D compatibility. It has all the major features we expect on midrange Blu-ray … Read more
Sony releases new 3D-ready Blu-ray player, upgrades other models
At CES 2010, Sony announced its first 3D Blu-ray player, the BDP-S770, but that won't be the only 3D-capable standalone Blu-ray player from Sony this year. Wednesday, Sony announced the BDP-S470, a midrange Blu-ray player that's slated to get a firmware update in the summer to make it 3D capable. In addition, the company announced that three previously announced products--the BDV-E770W, BDV-E570, and BDP-S570--will be getting the same 3D upgrade.
Aside from the 3D upgrade, the BDP-S470 looks to be very close to its predecessor, the BDP-N460, offering a full suite of streaming media services (Netflix, Amazon … Read more
