BlackBerry 10 Beta 3: Messenger, navigation show promise (hands-on)

When it comes to BackBerry 10 OS, RIM wants you to go with its Flow. The new navigation theme is something that the BlackBerry-maker has stressed since it first unveiled its reinvented BlackBerry ecosystem last May.

So far, RIM has given us a few peeks of flow and other software elements, all of which it hopes will reinvigorate faithful followers and draw new customers. RIM has certainly refined the software in four months, and will release its third beta update to developers today. The BlackBerry 10 OS Beta 3 package will include APIs for developers to harness apps like Blackberry Messenger. … Read more

RIM pushes BlackBerry 10 into the spotlight at BlackBerry Jam

Research In Motion and its next-generation BlackBerry 10 operating system will get another chance to prove their worth at the company's annual developer conference, kicking off Tuesday in San Jose, Calif.

In a move that will surely disappoint analysts, shareholders, and the RIM faithful, we don't expect the company to show off any new devices at BlackBerry Jam Americas (known last year as BlackBerry Developer Conference,) but they will want to provide more details about the OS, hoping loyal and new developers recommit to BlackBerry over iOS and Android. In addition to selling developers on the brand new … Read more

RIM: BlackBerry 10 to have biggest app-etite at launch

RIM may be months away from its first BlackBerry 10 OS offering, but the ailing BlackBerry-maker wants you to know that it's committed to a thriving app market at launch.

In fact, Alec Saunders, RIM's vice president of developer relations and ecosystem development, told CNET that RIM intends to launch its OS with more apps than any other first-generation operating system.

The pressure on Saunders and team to perform explains why RIM has been hitting app creators hard since May hosting BlackBerry Jam developer sessions around the world, including two here in the San Francisco Bay Area.… Read more

RIM: 'BlackBerry 10 is a game changer'

BlackBerry-maker RIM may be facing continued losses and deep uncertainty as it readies its first BlackBerry OS 10 smartphone, but if nothing else, the company has a sense of humor.

And some musical know-how among its ranks. Today's BlackBerry 10 Jam session for developers kicked off with a music video spoof of Tom Petty's "The Waiting," substituting Petty's original lyrics for those describing BlackBerry 10's progress.

"It's not quite ready yet," Alec Saunders, RIM's vice president of developer relations crooned from the projector. "Android and iOS, they're no … Read more

The morning after, and RIM still looks like a bad bet

It's another tough morning for Research In Motion, with shares falling more than 11 percent after the company warned things weren't getting any better soon.

Yesterday, RIM posted significant declines in revenue and profit in the fiscal third quarter, and provided a lackluster forecast for the following period. More importantly, executives admitted that their next-generation phone, running on the BlackBerry 10 platform, wouldn't come out until late next year--a blow to those who had pinned their hopes on RIM mounting a comeback in the next few months.

After an evening of processing the news, analysts came … Read more

RIM loses trademark ruling over 'BBX'

After losing an early round in its trademark dispute with a small New Mexico software provider over use of BBX, Research In Motion has opted for new name for its new operating system.

U.S. District Judge William P. Johnson in Albuquerque granted a temporary restraining order today requested by Basis International that bars RIM from using the BBX mark at the DevCon conference in Singapore this week. In granting the request, the court concluded that "the BBX mark is identical to the mark which RIM is allegedly using to present its BBX product."

Leaked BlackBerry pic could point to first BBX OS phone

We all know that RIM needs a new game plan to stay relevant in the super-smartphone age, and its name is BBX.

The forthcoming BBX operating system converges QNX, the OS behind the unsuccessful BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, and BlackBerry OS, which continues to run current BlackBerry smartphones.

Even when RIM announced its plan to develop BBX last month at the BlackBerry Developer Conference in San Francisco, it didn't tell us much else about it--what it'll really do, how it will look, and when it will launch. What we did know is that it'll succeed the BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 software...and that RIM doesn't even own the rights to the name.

The design we see here in this leaked image, which could be of a BBX phone (or may not be), has a large, edgy design with an all-touch display and no keyboard. That tidbit is consistent with reports that BBX phones will eschew the physical keyboard for which RIM is so famous.

How RIM intends to light a fire under developers

When Alec Saunders put up his e-mail address while on stage at Research In Motion's developer conference last month, it wasn't just a showy stunt.

In fact, he spent the entire following weekend responding to e-mails from curious developers.

"My wife wasn't too happy with me," he quipped.

Saunders intends to answer every e-mail that comes in, and plans to aggressively court developers as he makes the case for why it's worthwhile to work with RIM. That's the kind of attention the company has failed to pay in the past, much to its … Read more

Memo to RIM: Don't give up your keyboard

commentary Dear Research In Motion,

I know I've taken a few shots at you for not moving quickly enough to keep pace with your competitors. But there are some sacred cows you shouldn't sacrifice in the name of progress.

I am, of course, talking about your iconic keyboard.

If the rumors are true, your first super-smartphone running on the next-generation BBX platform will be an all-touch-screen device. PC Mag essentially confirmed it in an interview with RIM's new developer guru, Alec Saunders, who said the device uses the same screen ratio--16:9--as the PlayBook tablet. Such a … Read more

RIM's BBX phones may abandon classic Bold look

The iconic BlackBerry Bold look may be going the way of the dinosaurs once Research In Motion introduces its line of next-generation smartphones.

BlackBerrys running on RIM's next-generation platform, dubbed BBX, will use the same screen aspect ratio as the PlayBook tablet, RIM said yesterday in PC Magazine. RIM's head of developer relations, Alec Saunders, said apps that run on the PlayBook will run on BBX phones.

The PlayBook runs at a 16:9 ratio, which PC Magazine points out hasn't been seen on other mobile devices. But it suggests the first BBX phone will eschew the … Read more
