App-controlled robot bartender debuts at Google I/O

It won't console you as you drown your sorrows in alcohol, but MIT's Makr Shakr robotic bartender can make exactly the drink you're looking for before you've even arrived at the bar.

MIT's Senseable City Lab teamed up with Coca-Cola and Bacardi Rum to bring Makr Shakr to Google I/O, which starts Wednesday in San Francisco. The system allows barflies and frazzled developers alike to personalize their cocktail recipe of choice via a smartphone app, or to choose a libation created by another user, creating a crowdsourced drink menu.… Read more

Never be out of reach of a martini again

Between tailgating, entertaining and the rest of the get-togethers we go to, a bar on wheels can come in handy. The BarGoGo Transformer Portable Bar folds out of a suitcase about 31.5 inches by 23.25 inches by 13 inches and weighs about 62 pounds. Bartend like a pro

Here's a good way to become the most popular person at a party or bar--suggest and mix interesting cocktails. But if you're only interested in the most common drinks of our day, you may want to wait for version 2, which will feature more shots and modern drinks; this set will make the classics new again.

Regardless, Drinks for iPhone and iPod Touch is still one of the better bartending applications in its category, featuring great navigation to quickly get you to your favorites, the entire drinks library, or a search by mixers, liquor type, or garnish (in … Read more

Looks good, less filling

Cocktails recipes may be the sustaining purpose and anchor for the bartending application Party Pro, but the drinks library isn't the only character in the cast. An international unit converter, basic bartending tips, and a blood alcohol calculator make up the other three-fourths of the application, along with those recipes for the Lady Love Fizz and the Bloody Brain.

While the library is excellent, the application's organization could make the recipes more readily accessible. Instead, it favors a list-like architecture. The search function would be better were it predictive, and the application's bar locator misses an opportunity … Read more

Mix me up a 'mad scientist'

Is mixing a drink an art form? Or more of a science? Either way, the Cocktail Chemistry Set is perfect for a bartender ready to experiment. While it does have a basic shaker--a standard piece of bartending gear--the rest of the set looks like it came straight out of the lab. There's a 7-inch tall glass flask, perfect for mixing up unusual concoctions, along with an 8-inch glass stirrer. There are also four test tubes, perfect for serving up your latest drink, and a stand that holds all of the pieces. The whole set is decorated with different scientific … Read more

Bar2D2 is the life of the party

If you want to be the life of the party, it turns out you're better suited if you happen not to be alive at all. Case in point: Bar2D2. This non-sentient bartender-bot certainly seems to be the life of the party in this Flickr photostream.

Designed and constructed by Jamie Price, the radio-controlled bartender/bar was unleashed on the crowd at the recent ArcAttack Mad Scientist Ball. Far from an unwelcome robotic intrusion, Bar2D2 made friends with everybody from Darth Vader to Freddy from Nightmare on Elm Street at the Sci-fi-themed convention.

And who wouldn't want Bar2D2 unleashed … Read more
