Girl Scouts to award badge for video game development

While camping, gardening, and public speaking are important to being a stand-up scout, the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles has decided that video game development should also be included as a prestigious badge.

The Girl Scouts has teamed up with Women in Games International to create the new badge, according to GirlGamer. The aim is to get the scouts interested in engineering and software development. The badge will be part of the Girl Scout's STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curriculum.

"Our ultimate goal is to create a STEM-aligned video game badge for the Girl Scouts of … Read more

Instagram gives brands shortcut badges to drive traffic

Shortly after launching its online profile pages, Instagram is giving brands a way to get more customers to look at the profiles.

The company today introduced shortcut badges, icons that link to a brand's Instagram profile. Businesses can place the icons on a brand's Web site or blog, encouraging one-click access to profiles, which gives businesses a different way to show off their goods and promotions.

According to Facebook, which owns Instagram, merchants frequently request this feature. It's a reflection of Facebook's agenda to focus more on revenue by catering to brands. Badges are designed to … Read more

Follow a brand's Page in the new Foursquare app

Early this morning Foursquare rolled out a massive update, including both visual updates along with some great new features. One of which is the capability to easily discover and follow brand Pages. Up until now, there wasn't a streamlined method to follow a brand's Page when using the mobile app.

Following a brand's page provides Foursquare users with the added benefit of seeing tips and check-ins from a particular brand. There's another incentive for following a Page -- badges.

Some badges can only be unlocked by following a Page and checking into a specific venue. … Read more

Boy and Girl Scouts? Meet the hacker scouts

If you were ever a Boy Scout, you may recall earning an archery or camping badge. Girl Scouts offer athlete, naturalist, and many others. But what if you're a kid with serious 3D printing or laser cutting chops? Is there a badge for you?

There is now, thanks to the folks at Adafruit Industries, a New York-based open source hardware and maker products emporium. Starting in the next few days--timed to the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts on March 12--Adafruit will begin offering a broad set of skill badges that reward kids--and presumably others--for completing any of a … Read more

Foursquare and VH1 partner to help schools with music

With SXSW and Coachella on the horizon, Foursquare and VH1 have partnered to increase visibility and raise money for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, according to the tech news site Mashable.

How it works is concertgoers can follow VH1 on Foursquare to earn a limited edition "VH1 Save The Music" badge, then when they check-in at music venues across the country they'll be able to unlock the badge and $1 will be donated to the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

This foundation launched in 1997 with the goal to give public schools musical instruments and also … Read more

Top companies failing to promote their Google+ Pages

Google+ Pages have already been set up by 61 of the world's top 100 brands, though many have yet to take full advantage of the new business feature.

In a study released yesterday, social management company BrightEdge found that though 61 of the companies had already set up their Google+ Pages less than a week after the feature debuted, only 12 of those had displayed a link to those pages from their Web sites, which BrightEdge sees as a key way to round up followers.

Among the top 100 brands, Google had 65,000 followers on Google+ when BrightEdge … Read more

Google+ Badges can tie your Web site to your Google+ page

Following last week's debut of Google+ Pages for business, the search giant is kicking off a couple of extra options to help companies promote themselves and their pages.

First, Google+ badges can let people add your company to their circles and recommend your page via the +1 button directly from your Web site, as described in a Google blog post last week.

To set up Google+ badges, you first need to sign up with the Google+ platform preview group, if you haven't already done so. You then create and customize your badge at the Google+ configuration tool page. … Read more
