Verizon CEO talks up spectrum, downplays Sprint iPhone

NEW YORK - Verizon Communications CEO said he is not taking sides on whether AT&T should be allowed to buy T-Mobile USA, but he thinks that if the deal is blocked, the U.S. government needs to find ways to get more spectrum in the market. Senate antitrust leader opposes AT&T/T-Mobile merger

The head of the Senate's committee on antitrust wants regulators to put a kibosh on AT&T's proposed $39 billion bid to buy T-Mobile USA.

Today, Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), who heads up the Senate Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee, asked regulators in a letter to block the proposed merger, stating that the merger would be "highly dangerous to competition and consumers."

Separately today, Democratic leaders in the House also wrote their own letter to regulators asking for more scrutiny of the deal.

AT&T and T-Mobile: By the numbers

AT&T and T-Mobile rocked the United States this morning with merger plans that would make T-Mobile USA part of AT&T's empire. (That's assuming the buyout receives regulatory approval; until then, it's business as usual at T-Mobile for now.)

Both T-Mobile and AT&T have a claim to fame in recent smartphone history. AT&T was first to get the Apple iPhone, in an exclusive two-year deal no less, but it was T-Mobile that first got the Android ball rolling with the T-Mobile G1.
