Despite Windows 8.1, PC market prospects aren't pretty

Windows 8.1 may fix Microsoft's dot-zero release but it may not fix the PC market.

After Citi Research revised its PC market growth forecast down to negative 10 percent growth earlier in the month, market researcher IDC chimed in on Friday with a less-than-upbeat snapshot for May.

"May results reflect deteriorating conditions rather than improvement and the market will probably fall short of projections," said Loren Loverde, an IDC analyst in a statement, referring to May regional PC shipments.

"The results for May are behind pace for achieving the projected [second quarter 2013] growth rate,&… Read more

Asus Fonepad Note FHD 6 is a promising phablet but lacks 4G

Phablets are here to stay! Just kidding -- it's too soon to tell if the hybrid phone-tablet trend will become a standard, but the category will soon add the Asus Fonepad Note FHD 6 to its growing landscape.

The Android 4.2 phablet is similar to the Asus Fonepad, which has recently become commercially available in Asia, but features a smaller 6-inch Super IPS+ LCD screen with a higher 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution. Unlike its predecessor, the Fonepad Note FHD 6 is designed with a stylus, which makes use of baked-in software provided by Asus.

Asus takes on the HTPC market

TAIPEI -- In addition to new laptops and tablets, Asus also showcased its latest home theater PC (HTPC) offerings, the VivoPC and VivoMouse, at Computex.

The VivoPC appears somewhat larger than the Mac mini, but it has a high-quality metal chassis and is designed to blend easily among A/V devices. Other key differentiators include a pair of front speakers and 3.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) support. This is unlike most small form factor PCs, which can accept only 2.5-inch HDDs.
