Sharp debuts 32-inch 4K resolution IGZO LCD monitor

LAS VEGAS--Sharp kicked off its media event at the 2013 International CES on Monday by revealing the future of the electronics giant's display portfolio.

IGZO is based on a compound semi-conductor that produces approximately twice the resolution of current LCDs.

Sharp unveils 'affordable' 80-inch television

Sharp has taken the wraps off the largest consumer LCD, the 80-inch LC-80LE632U, which will be available in early October for $5,499.

The non-Quattron LC-80LE632U features a full-array LED backlight, but according to Sharp isn't a "premium" television and so is missing features like local dimming and even 3D. It does feature a 1080p resolution and 120Hz mode, though.

The TV also features "smart," wireless functionality with "hundreds of apps" including Netflix and Vudu and a remote setup service called Aquos Advantage Live.

These specifications and features are in line with the 70-inch LC-70LE732U, a product we lauded for its "very good picture quality, especially in bright rooms."

Sharp recently brought the Elite brand back from the dead, and also used its event in New York to show off its aluminum-framed PRO-70X5FD.

Sharp's 70-inch and 80-inch TVs are now the largest LCD TVs on the market, with their only competitors being rear projection in the form of Mitsubishi's 3D Home Cinema range.… Read more

First phone to shoot 3D HD video hits Japan

Move over James Cameron. By the end of the month any Japanese teenager will be able to get their hands on the tools to create the next 3D blockbuster. Well, almost.

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has announced a smartphone, equipped with two cameras, that's capable of shooting high-def 3D video. The Aquos Phone SH-12C will be made by Sharp and reportedly has a bigger screen and faster processors than the two 3D HD smartphones already available in Japan from the company, which could shoot 3D stills, but not video.

The Aquos phone's specs will be able to compete with the much-anticipated LG Optimus 3D, which is expected this summer. It packs two 8-megapixel cameras on the back and can shoot 3D movies with a resolution of 720p (high definition); a 1.4GHz Qualcomm chip at the center of things will make the magic happen.

Preorders for the Aquos start May 14 in Japan and the phone hits May 20. No details on pricing just yet.
