Apple TV nears Time Warner Cable deal, Bloomberg says

Apple and Time Warner Cable are nearing a deal that would bring new channels to the computer maker's set-top box, Apple TV, for subscribers of the cable television service, Bloomberg reported Tuesday citing people with knowledge of the talks.

A deal would bring the set-top box a significant influx of channels, and its first flood of live ones.

Apple has been expanding its offerings on the device, which connects Web videos and other media to the traditional television but lacks the the broad array of channels that its chief competitor Roku offers.

Apple jumps into back-to-school with App Store gift card

School may only have ended recently, but Apple is already offering deals to student shoppers.

The company on Tuesday announced that students who buy a Mac through the Apple Online Store for Education will receive a $100 App Store Gift Card. Students who buy an iPad or iPhone will receive a $50 gift card.

Apple wins patent on opaque-to-transparent bezel tech

The bezel around touch-screen displays might become a bit more useful in the future, if Apple has its way.

The company on Tuesday was awarded a patent on a bezel technology that could extend the viewable area of the screen. The patent, which was filed in September 2012, specifically describes a method by which the bezel around the display will remain opaque when users are touching around the screen. As they get close to the bezel, however, it turns transparent to reveal more screen real estate. Apple specifically calls it a "window." AppleInsider was first to discover the patent.… Read more

Apple extends iWatch trademark filings to more countries

Apple's iWatch is already making a name for itself, at least when it comes to trademark filings.

Applications to trademark the iWatch moniker have popped up in Mexico, Taiwan, and Turkey, according to the folks at 9to5Mac and MacRumors. The filings in Mexico and Taiwan directly list Apple as the applicant, while the one in Turkey came from an attorney who has worked with Apple in the past. All three were filed on June 3.

In need of a daily dose of rumors about future iPhones? Well, A Chinese-language blog claims the budget iPhone is on the way, while a Korean news outlet expects a version of the iPhone 5S with high-speed LTE.

Let's start with the most colorful rumor. Chinese tech blog lieyunwang claims -- via Brightwire -- that Hon Hai Precision (aka, Foxconn) has begun production of the entry-level iPhone, expected to be offered in several different colors.

Apple to release fiscal Q3 financial results July 23

Apple executives will discuss the company's financial performance for its fiscal third quarter in a July 23 conference call, according to an update made Monday to the company's investor relations page.

The call, which as usual will offer an audio stream online, is expected to cover the company's revenue and sales figures for the fiscal quarter that ended in late June. CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer will likely be on hand to provide a financial forecast for the next quarter.
