Facebook App Center goes global

Facebook this morning rolled out its App Center to all of its 955 million monthly active users around the world. The news didn't come from the usual Facebook press release or blog post, but ironically via a Facebook PR representative sending out a message on Twitter:

The Facebook App Center is now available to 100% of users worldwide. Your personalized & localized App Center here: http://www.facebook.com/appcenter

I contacted Facebook to make sure the launch was complete and whether there was something more official to reference beyond a tweet, and a representative confirmed the news and … Read more

How there's still room for a Facebook app store

Are there too many app stores out there? Surprisingly, maybe not.

Facebook is the latest entrant into the increasingly crowded world of app stores with its App Center, which got its formal debut Thursday.

My initial reaction: another app store? Really?

Our lives are already inundated with several app stores. Of course, there's Apple's App Store and iTunes, and Google Play on Android. Microsoft has an app store for Windows and Windows Phone. The carriers offer their own stores, as do handset manufacturers such as Research In Motion (BlackBerry App World) and the Nokia Store.

Expect iOS 6, new MacBooks at Apple conference Monday

In today's show, we look into the Apple crystal ball, get hit with more apps and save up for new games:

Apple will be highlighting new products at its annual Developer's Conference Monday. Expect computers to get Intel's new processors, and we'll likely hear about new 3D maps on iOS 6 and other mobile system upgrades.

Some have said laptops could get retina display, which is found on iPhones and iPads. That seemed pretty improbably, until recently. An application for Macs has been updated to support retina graphics. That raised a few eyebrows.

Is Facebook building an iTunes/Google Play competitor?

Facebook isn't pressing the panic button as its stock price dipped below $30 this week, but investors are not showing much love for the company.

They want to know soon whether the honeymooning Mark Zuckerberg can turn Facebook's massive pool of personal data, and billions of user interactions per day, into a super-profitable business, like Google or Apple.

Zuckerberg seems to have a different near-term agenda, following Jeff Bezos' Amazon school of management -- attain dominant market share before profits. The formula is to focus on creating an extraordinary customer experience and sign up a few billion users, … Read more
