Stephen Hawking predicts end-of-Earth scenario

Stephen Hawking, one of the world's greatest physicists and cosmologists, is once again warning his fellow humans that our extinction is on the horizon unless we figure out a way to live in space.

Not known for conspiracy theories, Hawking's rationale is that the Earth is far too delicate a planet to continue to withstand the barrage of human battering.

"We must continue to go into space for humanity," Hawking said today, according to the Los Angeles Times. "We won't survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet."… Read more

Rock the undead with zombie apocalypse guitar

If music can tame the savage beast, could the power of rock reduce brain-hungry zombies to purring kittens?

Guitar hacker Travis Stevens has made a significant contribution to collective self-defense against the coming zombie apocalypse. Along with zombie safe houses and survival kits, his Zombie Apocalypse Electric Guitar could prove a refuge and weapon of last resort.

This tribute to the rise of the undead is a reworked copy of a Fender Stratocaster, but it bears little resemblance to Strats you're used to. … Read more

Higgs Boson calculations add up to new Armageddon scenario

Anyone who thinks the end is nigh with a giant asteroid colliding into Earth may have a new apocalypse scenario to worry about.

It all boils down to the Higgs Boson particle, aka the "God particle."

Calculations that came with the likely discovery of the Higgs Boson last July also show that the particle's mass qualities could spell out the end of the universe said Fermilab theoretical physicist Joseph Lykken yesterday, according to NBC's Cosmic Log.

However, doomsdayers don't need to fret too much, the scientist also said that the likelihood of such a demise … Read more

Mayan apocalypse fails, according to Australia

The reports are rolling in on Reddit. Australia and New Zealand have successfully crossed over into December 21 without the world ending. This news should make NASA happy.

Redditor sasquatch92 posted an image of a clock hitting 12:00 while flames licked around the casing. This is especially strange since we all know that Sasquatches are afraid of fire. Still, it does offer some slight bit of photographic evidence that the world hasn't abruptly ended as so many Mayan calendar fans have predicted.… Read more

End Times as fun times: The best apocalypse gear around

NASA might not agree, but plenty of folks seems to think the apocalypse is imminent. Whether it happens this Friday or decades from now, it's never too early to start preparing.

With that in mind, I scoured the CNET archives and watched hours of "The Walking Dead," "Falling Skies," "Revolution," "Wolf's Rain," "Red Dwarf," and dozens of other series to come up with this gallery of essential pieces of gear to start investing in now, while you still can.… Read more

How to prepare yourself for Friday's apocalypse

I know that many wise organizations, including NASA, have declared that the world will not end -- as some Mayans had predicted -- next Friday.

NASA has even released an advance, advanced video (embedded here), explaining why this will not happen.

We at Technically Incorrect tend to be a little more sanguine. There is a 50 percent chance that the world will end. Because, well, there are only two options: either it will or it won't.

I'd hate you to be blind-sided by apocalyptic inconvenience. So I have searched high, low and lower in search of useful steps … Read more

NASA releases Mayan calendar 'told ya so' video 10 days early

NASA is pretty confident the world is not going to end in the next 10 days, regardless of what the Mayan calendar or alleged rogue planet Nibiru might have to say about it.

Recently, NASA scientists gathered for a Google Hangout to debunk the multiple end-of-world theories alleged to transpire later this month. NASA even put together a YouTube video titled "Why the World Didn't End Yesterday" clearly meant to be released on December 22, after the winter solstice doomsday the day before. … Read more

Halloween pumpkin art: Carving the zombie apocalypse

The only thing better than a zombie pumpkin is a 6-foot-tall rotting zombie pumpkin.

In a marvelous tribute to the coming zombie apocalypse, Phoenix-based master pumpkin carver Ray Villafane and his team have chopped up super-squashes at the New York Botanical Garden.

The Haunted Pumpkin Garden exhibit opened earlier this month but its main attraction, the zombie harvester, is now rotting beautifully. … Read more
