Tesla plans big announcement that Model S owners 'will like'

There's the possibility that Tesla may be looking to make its luxury all-electric cars a tiny bit more affordable. The company's CEO Elon Musk tweeted Thursday that Tesla will announce some big news on Friday.

Announcement of new @teslamotors strategy tomorrow. Tesla owners will like this.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 25, 2013

While no further information is given, this tweet does offer some clues into what Musk may be suggesting. The fact that he mentioned it will be something "Tesla owners will like" harkens back to a similar tweet from last month.

A6 chip: More Apple, less ARM

Apple's chip investments may have borne native fruit with the A6.

The iPhone 5's A6 may be more of an Apple creation than previous A series chips, according to an updated post by review site Anandtech.

Like Qualcomm, Apple is incorporating more of its in-house expertise into chips. And that means it's getting further away from pure ARM designs. For example, the latest design from U.K.-based ARM is the Cortex A15, which Texas Instruments is using in future chips.

But Apple isn't going that route, according to Anandtech. And that means that past Apple … Read more

Inside the iPhone 5: What makes it tick

Apple's revamp of the iPhone included an overhaul of the inside too. So, what new silicon did Apple drop into the iPhone 5's chassis?

A6 chip: It's faster! (duh). Here's a summary of what Apple says. "Up to twice as fast compared with the [iPhone 4S' A5 chip]...The A6 chip also offers graphics performance that's up to twice as fast as the A5."

Problem is, Apple doesn't say much beyond that. So, I asked Anand Shimpi from chip review site Anandtech.

It turns out that Anand's initial guess was wrong. … Read more

Biggest quarter for iPhone sales, says iSuppli

Apple is headed for a record quarter for iPhone sales, according to market researcher IHS iSuppli.

The fourth quarter will be huge, iSuppli said in a research note today. "Apple's biggest quarter for iPhone sales in history."

The iPhone 5 will drive Apple's smartphone shipments in 2012 to 149 million units, up 60 percent from 93 million in 2011, iSuppli said.

"The new phone will be released with just over a week left in the third quarter, so most of the iPhone 5 sales bump in 2012 will be seen in the final [fourth] quarter … Read more

Apple iPhone 5: Early reactions from around the Web

Now that the feverish iPhone 5 anticipation is simmering down into the reality of the announcement, it's time to see what the initial reactions are to the news.

Here's the big summary. The glass and aluminum iPhone 5 sports 4G LTE, a 4-inch Retina display, an upgraded camera, iOS 6, and a fast new A6 chip. It's also 7.6mm thick and weighs 20 percent less than the iPhone 4S. One of the biggest changes is the new, much-smaller Lightning connector. An adapter will make it work with older connectors, but it's quite a departure for both consumers and accessory makers.

Looking back at the iPhone 4S announcement last year, a lot of people we're decidedly underwhelmed. The iPhone 5 is finally here and everyone has an opinion to share. Apple's senior vice president of product marketing Phil Schiller called it "an absolute jewel." Do others agree?… Read more
