4,600-year-old game software?

The Royal Game of Ur, also known as the Game of 20 Squares, is based on board game equipment excavated at the site of the ancient Sumerian city of Ur in Mesopotamia. While no rules survived, the same basic game is still played in modern-day Iraq. Players roll dice to advance chits along a path, a classic layout that will be familiar to anyone old enough to master Uncle Wiggly, and one that some believe is an ancestor of backgammon. Ur from Tams11 is a free software game based on the ancient board game. You can play it against a … Read more

Microsoft on iTunes in 2003: 'We were smoked'

There has been a lot of commentary following last week's New York Times op-ed by Dick Brass, a former Microsoft executive who claims that the company is bogged down by process and infighting, and has hence lost its ability to innovate.

One of the most interesting follow-ups comes from Groklaw, which dug up some e-mails placed into the public record a few years ago during an antitrust case against Microsoft. (These materials have been a treasure trove of interesting and sometimes-embarrassing internal communications, including then-Windows chief Jim Allchin's 2004 admission that he would have bought a Mac over … Read more

Unreliable reading

We've reviewed a lot of programs from Mystic Board, and almost all of them are poorly designed pieces of software that contain very little in the way of useful content. 'The Aeneid': Combat evolved?

Forget 300. The real way to make ancient history and literature cool is...Halo?

We've already seen World of Warcraft used as a way to bring The Canterbury Tales into the digital age. But that was a student project--this interesting story, which we read on Joystiq, is the project of a professor at the University of Connecticut who's looking to better connect his students with the literature they're assigned in class. This would be Robert Travis, an associate professor of modern and classical languages, who has gone so far as to take an Xbox to class into … Read more
