Akamai: A third of cyberattacks come from China

A third of all cyberattacks in the third quarter of 2012 came from China, a new report from Akamai said, double the percentage in the second period.

Safari users hit by Facebook certificate error

In the past day a number of Safari users noticed a frequent and seemingly widespread error that claimed a certificate is invalid for a connection to the URL "static.ak.facebook.com," cautioning users against trusting the connection and providing options to continue or cancel the connection. The error seemed random in nature since it happened on different Web sites that use Facebook's embedded services such as the "Like" button, but also seemed to revolve around a recent event or change that is affecting only Safari users.

Akamai: U.S. Web speeds fast, but not blazing like South Korea's

We all want faster Web connections. But those connecting to the Web in South Korea are actually getting what they want, according to the latest State of the Internet report from Akamai.

According to the network solutions provider, South Korea is putting most other countries to shame with average Web connection speeds of about 16Mbps. The U.S., by contrast, offers average connection speeds of 5.8Mbps, putting it behind a host of countries, including Japan, Romania, and Switzerland.

Following the sudden ousting of Carol Bartz, rumors naturally and quickly swirled about who would be making the short list to replace her as Yahoo's chief executive officer.

Akamai says it can defend against Anon attacks

Akamai managers say they could have bolstered the Web sites that buckled under attacks launched recently by Internet vigilantes.

The world's largest content delivery network says it has enough servers and the right kind of network to "mitigate distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks," Neil Cohen, Akamai's senior director of product marketing told CNET. DDoS describes the practice of overwhelming a Web site with traffic so that it can't be accessed.

Report: Netflix sidelines Akamai in favor of rivals

Netflix is handing more content-distribution business to Level 3 and Limelight and less to rival Akamai, but it has nothing to do with Akamai's performance according to a Netflix spokesman.

On Tuesday, Dan Rayburn reported at his blog Businessofvideo.com that Netflix was making the change because of displeasure over Akamai's performance in delivering streaming video to Netflix subscribers. That's not correct, said Steve Swasey, Netflix's spokesman

Akamai employee charged with wire fraud

An employee of Web content-delivery company Akamai Technologies has been arrested and charged with wire fraud after allegedly sharing company information with an individual he believed was an "agent of a foreign government," the U.S. attorney's office announced yesterday.

According to the U.S. attorney's office, it charged Elliot Doxer, an employee in Akamai's finance department, with one count of wire fraud yesterday. The complaint (PDF) filed in U.S. District Court in Boston against Doxer claims his crimes date back to 2006 when he allegedly contacted a foreign consulate.

Report: Global Net speeds keep bumping up

The fastest are getting faster.

Eight of the top 10 countries or regions in terms of Internet speed saw a boost in the final quarter of 2009, according to Akamai's "State of the Internet Report" released Tuesday.

Among those top areas, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan grabbed the best Internet performance globally, averaging connection speeds higher than 7.5 megabits per second (Mbps) in the fourth quarter. Although South Korea actually was hit by a 29 percent decline in performance year over year, it still snagged the No. 1 spot at 11.7 Mbps.
