Sorkin's Steve Jobs biopic to play out in three acts

That other Steve Jobs movie, currently being written by "West Wing" and "Newsroom" creator Aaron Sorkin, will apparently be told in three acts, the screenwriter said today.

In an onstage interview at the Hero Summit (relayed by tweets from the The Daily Beast), Sorkin detailed a bit of how the story would play out, saying it would take place across three, half hour scenes and behind the curtains at three of Apple's product launches for the first Macintosh computer, NeXT computer, and the iPod.

Jobs was a well-known showman at such events, adding an air … Read more

Sorkin: Writing about Jobs is like writing about The Beatles

Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin says that writing the screenplay for the upcoming biopic of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is a lot like trying to write about The Beatles.

Speaking at the D10 Conference today, the award-winning screenwriter and producer said he's currently at the "earliest possible stage" of putting together the screenplay for the feature film, and that it's not just as simple as sitting down with the source material.

"What I'll do is go through a long period that would not look to any casual observer like writing," Sorkin jokingly told interviewer … Read more

The Woz hired as an adviser on Sony's Steve Jobs biopic

Steve Jobs couldn't start Apple without Steve Wozniak, and apparently Aaron Sorkin can't tell Jobs' story without the Woz.

The Oscar-winning screenwriter has hired the Apple co-founder as an adviser as he turns Walter Isaacson's best-selling biography "Steve Jobs" into a screenplay for a movie project that Sony Pictures announced on Tuesday. Sorkin is best known for his Academy Award-winning adaptation of "The Social Network," an account of how Mark Zuckerberg built the Facebook empire.

The 404 728: Where we pet it on its head (podcast)

The Golden Globe nominations were released this morning, and though "The King's Speech" received the most nominations, "The Social Network" was also honored for Best Picture--Drama, Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Best Supporting Actor (Andrew Garfield), Best Director (David Fincher), Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), and Best Original Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). We saw the movie when it first came out, but CNET's social-media reporter Caroline McCarthy knows much more about the film, so we're psyched to have her on the show today!

Caroline and Jeff are both addicted to TV shows like "Boardwalk Empire," "30 Rock," and "Mad Men," which share Best TV nominations for a drama, musical, or comedy, but the three of us are confused about the appearance of "The Walking Dead," a show that the Internet seems to collectively hate for its departure from the original graphic-novel storyline.

Along with the rest of the discoveries in Zeitgeist 2010, Google has also shared the "fastest-falling" list of searches in 2010. In other words, these are the search terms that enjoyed popularity in 2009 but failed to keep up the momentum this year.

The list includes swine flu, Circuit City, Myspace Layouts, and Michael Jackson, despite the release of a new album in December.

Check out this graphic of the world according to Facebook. Facebook intern Paul Butler wondered how to show an accurate representation of Facebook's popularity across the globe, and his idea to visualize Facebook "Internet" friendships on a map actually shows the extent of real human relationships.

Interestingly enough, the picture reveals that even Argentina, Southeast Asia, and South Africa have a strong Facebook presence, while a significant portion of China and Russia are missing due to Web censorship.

Girls geeks are uniting in support of a young Star Wars fan who was bullied by classmates after choosing a Star Wars water bottle and matching backpack for school. Her mom wrote a heartfelt blog asking female Star Wars fans to send messages and comments to show Katie that plenty of women appreciate Star Wars, and within days the post received more than 1,000 messages of support.

With all the attention on bullying these days, both online and in person, it's important to remind young people that it's great to be different...and that nerds make more money.

The 404 676: Where Mark Zuckerberg sees dead people (podcast)

Big thanks to Sony for sending us to last night's prescreening of "The Social Network". Of course, all three of us loved the film, and without giving away any spoilers, we spend some time at the beginning of today's episode of The 404 Podcast to discuss everything we loved (Sorkin's screenplay, Reznor/Ross's score, actor performances, etc...) as well as our suspicions about the truthfulness of the story, but with a 100 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, you should definitely see for yourself!

It seems that at least one story on The 404 per week is dedicated to the movie "Hackers," and this week we're celebrating the 15th anniversary of the movie's 1995 release by running through Alexander Sotirov's Cyberpunk Style Guide.

The photoblog showcases some of the movie's best wardrobe choices, which includes a lot of multipocketed vests, latex leggings, rollerblades, and at least one cat shirt. Of course, Jeff's favorite scene featuring Angelina Jolie in a NJ Devil's jersey is always represented on the site as well.

It's hard to believe, but George Lucas and his visual effects teams at LucasFilms and ILM are actually re-re-releasing the six "Star Wars" films in 3D, starting with "The Phantom Menace" in 2012. After that, Lucas will release one "Star Wars" film per year in 3D, and Lucas says by 2012, enough theaters around the country will have the 3D technology to support a wide release.

Sounds like a plot to squeeze a billion or so more dollars out of the series, and while many fans were irate about the changes and additions to the beloved classics, apparently the 3D releases will also include even more never-before-seen footage. For die-hard fans who can't wait, the Star Wars films will also be available in high definition on 2D Blu-ray next year.

The 404 673: Where we turn it off and on again (podcast)

Peter Ha from TIME Magazine's Techland joins us again today to wrap up a week's worth of stories, including yesterday's Facebook meltdown, Adidas sneakers inspired by Boba Fett, Wil Wheaton, Halo: Reach, Moleskines, and more!

We kick off the show with Peter showing off his new limited-edition Star Wars X Adidas Originals ZX800 sneakers with side panels inspired by Boba Fett! You can see that the shoes are influenced by Boba Fett's weathered armor, and the special Mandalorian patches on the heels. Peter definitely made the right choice...the Adidas Chewbacca shoes from the same collection aren't quite as subtle.

Peter also tells us about the news around Techland, and apparently actor Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation) is now writing for the Web site. Check out all of Wil's articles online, including The Evolution of E-mail Spam, Why I Hate DRM, and Recovering from W00tstock.

Apparently CNET wasn't the only office that almost went up in smoke after Facebook mysteriously displayed a DNS error yesterday afternoon. Soon after, Facebook software engineering director Robert Johnson blamed the technical error on a change to the site that caused configuration value errors for every client, causing Facebook's clusters to be "overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of queries a second.

To fix this error, engineers utilized a classic troubleshooting method that's spanned a hundred of years of electrical design: turn it off, and then back on again. That's all it took, and while some users might still experienced intermittent errors over the next few days, the majority of us can sleep well knowing our profiles are still intact and open for liking.
