T-Mobile to push Android 2.2 to MyTouch 3G

T-Mobile and HTC are set to begin releasing a much-anticipated Android 2.2 update to their MyTouch 3G handset. According to information obtained by TmoNews, the carrier will start pushing Froyo out as early as today and continue through October 25.

You may recall T-Mobile's CTO, Cole Brodman, pledging to leave no phone behind as it pertains to its MyTouch series of phones. Coming shortly after the official announcement of Android 2.2, Brodman promised that each of the MyTouch branded handsets would be supported at least through Froyo.

The recent wave of Android devices doesn't seem to be slowing down as T-Mobile just announced that its latest Android smartphone, the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide, will hit the streets on June 2 for $179.99 with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

As we noted when the phone was announced in early May, the MyTouch 3G Slide features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 3.4-inch HVGA capacitive touch screen, a 5-megapixel camera, and the full range of wireless options. With roughly a month to go before its expected launch, the myTouch 3G Slide rumors and leaks have kicked into high gear.

A fresh batch of details found its way online over the weekend thanks to a source at Android and Me. Apparently T-Mobile and HTC recently gave out several hundred of these handsets to T-Mobile employees for testing and feedback. This source was among one of those lucky folks and was only too happy to provide details about the phone.

On Wednesday, T-Mobile announced a new version of the myTouch 3G that brings additional features, such as a 3.5mm headphone jack, more preloaded apps, and Swype technology. It will replace the original model but still carry the same name and price tag of $149.99 with a two-year contract.

First the divas and now the rockers. On Thursday, T-Mobile announced that it will release a special edition of the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G that has been redesigned in partnership with renowned guitar manufacturer, Fender.

T-Mobile rolls out Android 1.6 Donut to G1 and MyTouch 3G

Just a couple of weeks after Google released its Android 1.6 SDK to developers, T-Mobile began its official roll out of Android 1.6 (aka Donut) to T-Mobile G1 and T-Mobile MyTouch 3G owners on Thursday.

The update will be delivered to customers over the coming days, and though it's not considered to be a major upgrade to the operating system, Android 1.6 does bring a number of new features and enhancements and fixes a bug that would reboot the phone after dialing 911.

T-Mobile: Churn's up from a year ago

T-Mobile said Thursday that it added 325,000 net customers in its second quarter, but a contract churn rate of 2.2 percent, up from 1.9 percent a year ago is a trouble spot. T-Mobile said that its new Android-powered MyTouch 3G and a distribution pact with Radio Shack gives it "opportunities for new growth."
