In the wake of an apparent glitch in which many iCloud users found their storage levels set to expire 38 years in the future, Apple has extended the increased temporary storage for former MobileMe users for another year.

When Apple released its iCloud service, the 5GB of online storage provided was less than the 20GB offered in its previous MobileMe service. To help MobileMe users in the migration, Apple offered a temporary 20GB of additional storage for existing MobileMe users, to help accommodate their data during the transition.

In an e-mail sent out to its iCloud subscribers who have kept with the service in its transition to iCloud, Apple is reminding users that their complimentary 20GB of extra storage from the MobileMe transition will be revoked on September 30.

Through the years of its cloud-based offerings, Apple has steadily increased the storage level offerings for its users, allowing them more options for distributing storage for various account services including iDisk and e-mail. Apple today began notifying former MobileMe customers that their free 25GB iCloud accounts will be reduced to 5GB as of Sept. 30, MacRumors reports. Customers have to free up space or pay for 20GB of additional storage, which costs $40 a year.

Apple earlier this year shuttered MobileMe in favor of its new iCloud storage. The service allows users to back up and store their documents and media on the cloud.

Apple's latest transition to iCloud brings with it the use of the new iCloud.com domain; however, so far people have had to sign in with their old me.com accounts. UPDATE (July 1): MobileMe is officially closed, but Apple is for a "limited time" offering links for users to access the services and retrieve their files, as well as upgrade their existing accounts to iCloud.

Come Sunday, Apple will make good on a year-old promise: MobileMe, its paid cloud sync and storage service, will go dark.

That means files that users have stored on the service -- as well as the sites they have published through Apple's iWeb software -- are going to disappear as well.
