Review: Robo Defense FREE is fun and addictive, but it ends too quickly

Robo Defense FREE is a tower defender that stands out for its quick and addictive gameplay. It's one of the most basic tower-defense games on Android, but that may make it one of the best. You have to pay up to unlock all of its levels and maps, but it's worth the $3.

This application comes as a toned-down version of the full game that only gives you 11 levels on one map. You'll unlock endless upgrades and gameplay with the premium version of the app. That's a refreshing change from the "freemium" tower … Read more

Review: Muzy is an all-in-one photo editing app

Muzy has one of the most robust set of features we've yet seen in a photo editing app. You won't even have to put up with ads to use it, either.

This app makes you log in before you can start editing your photos. You can save some time by connecting your Facebook profile. If you go that route, you can edit all of your Facebook photos and even some of your friend's photos. The app doesn't stick to one type of photo editing; it lets you create collages, add filters, crop, retouch, and more. There … Read more

Build empires to go, with Freeciv Portable

Freeciv Portable is Freeciv, the open-source civilization-building game, rendered totally portable by PortableApps. As with the installed version, players attempt to build empires over a timescale spanning the Stone Age to the Space Age. Freeciv Portable lets you play new games, save and return to games, and connect to network games, just like the regular freeware. Freeciv's been around a long time, and the original version from the mid-1990s was based on an even older game from the Days of DOS, Sid Meier's Civilization. It's gotten much more sophisticated since then, in both look and gameplay.

Purge the junk with System Ninja Portable

Junk food threatens your health, doctors say. Junk files threaten your computer's health in much the same way, by clogging up its data arteries with useless deposits that slowly strangle its performance. In both cases, exercise is crucial to maintaining the health of the overall system. Luckily, keeping your system fit and trim is easy, thanks to system cleaners like The Web Atom's System Ninja Portable. This portable freeware scans your computer for the digital equivalent of fatty deposits, such as temporary files and browser histories, and cleans them out, helping your system to run more like it … Read more

Size matters

GetFoldersize does a simple thing: it display the size of your files and folders. It manages to make this simple but extremely useful function not only quick and easy but also highly flexible. It's freeware from Michael Thummerer Software Design.

GetFoldersize has a three-part, draggable, and easily resized interface, with a left-hand Folders panel and a split view on the right, Drives above Files, that could be displayed and hidden via toolbar icons. In fact, most of this program's options are available right on the toolbar, including font size, interface language, columns, icon labels and size, and units … Read more

Tracking cents

Expense Log Pro may not be the most embellished of the expense-monitoring and -reporting apps for BlackBerry, but a comparative few will need more than the ability to enter receipts and e-mail finished reports. We were able to create a variety of records for meals, mileage, lodging, and phone bills and e-mail them successfully via PDF. Though filling in options from the drop-down menu could be smoother, we appreciate the ability to add our own categories, even currencies--so long as you know the exchange rate.

This free, simple app requires you to first register for the service, which you can … Read more

Retrieve iPhone MMS and Visual Voicemail with PhoneView

One of the best Mac OS X tools in my arsenal of iPhone utilities is Ecamm Network's PhoneView, which lets you retrieve your call history, export contacts, play and save voice memos, search and save SMS messages, play and export music, download photos, and create, edit, and save notes. It even lets you use your iPhone as a disk drive.

Now an update to Phoneview has added three new key features that make the app even more useful.

The first new features let you retrieve MMS messages and view them later on your computer. (The previous versions only handled … Read more
