Surface fine print: Windows eats up storage space

Windows has a bad rep for gobbling up storage space on PCs. Ditto Surface.

The $499 32GB Surface tablet actually leaves you with only 16GB free storage space for things like music, photos, and videos, according to Microsoft documentation.

So, what's devouring all of that flash storage space? On a 32GB Surface, Windows reports 29GB available. Subtract 5GB for Windows recovery tools, then another 8GB for Windows RT, Microsoft Office, and built-in apps. That leaves 16GB for the user.

On the 64GB model, you're left with 46GB.

Well, that was fast. Just one week after the 16GB-capacity Google Nexus 7 tablet suddenly ran out of stock, the higher-capacity version of Asus' critically acclaimed Android tablet is back in the Google Play Store, with a current delivery estimate of three to five business days.

That's the same estimated delivery time as the 8GB Nexus 7.

B&N begins in-store Nook Tablet memory reallocation program

One of our biggest disappointments with Barnes & Noble's original 16GB Nook Tablet was that while it was ostensibly twice as capacious as the 8GB Kindle Fire only 1GB of its internal memory was accessible for side-loaded user content. So, unless you invested in a microSD expansion card, you couldn't drag and drop a lot of music and movies for those times where streaming Netflix or Pandora wouldn't cut cut it, such as when you're on a long flight.

Sony slashes Tablet S price, signaling trend

Sony has knocked $100 off the price of its S series tablet, another sign that non-Apple tablet pricing is trending downward.

The 16GB Tablet S is now $400, reduced from $500, while the 32GB model got cut to $500 from $600.

Specs include a 9.4-inch 1280x800 display, front and rear cameras, Android Honeycomb, 1GB system memory, and eight hours of rated battery life.

Exclusive: New information about Sony tablets

CNET has learned some new details on Sony's upcoming S1 and S2 tablets.

A source familiar with the company's plans for the Android devices tells us that four versions of the S1 will be available at launch: 16GB Wi-Fi only; 16GB Wi-Fi and 3G; 32GB Wi-Fi; and 32GB Wi-Fi and 3G. The S2 will come in 16GB and 32GB models that have both Wi-Fi and 3G, but no separate Wi-Fi-only variant like the S1, the source says. Those desiring more capacity will be pleased to know that the S1 tablet has a full-size SD memory card reader onboard for additional storage.

The source also pointed out that the S1 features an 9.4-inch IPS display with TruBlack and Bravia display technologies.

We weren't able to confirm the battery life of the S1 tablet, but our source did mention that it's "comparable to the iPad 2." The battery life of the S2 is unknown, but could possibly suffer from the dual-screen setup. Several accessories will also be made available for the S1, including a dock and at least one Bluetooth keyboard.
