McLaren proves P1 concept car has an engine

In this video released by McLaren Automotive, we see the P1 concept car, originally unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, undergoing track testing.

The car sports typical camouflage for models under development, somewhat odd considering the earlier reveal of the concept. One key difference between what was seen at Paris and the model in the video is a big wing sitting on the back of the car. The wing approximates the shape of the P1 at the rear, so could possibly be retractable, although its height would argue otherwise.

As of this posting, McLaren had not specified an engine … Read more

Cooley's Logbook: 2013 Audi S5

A number of Audi purists (and a couple of intenders around the office) groaned when I showed them the new S5 with its V6. And it turns out they are on to something. Not that the car isn't responsive, but there is a point where the power flattens out right when you think it will keep coming. You actually have to be good about selecting gears and reading the situation ahead. Welcome to the new downsized world -- and to actually driving, not just throttle pressing. … Read more

Streetpong lets pedestrians play Pong against each other

Two students at the HAWK University in Germany have created an interesting concept to kill time and entertain pedestrians while waiting at a crosswalk. Instead of simply standing around waiting for the light to change, Sandro Engel and Holger Michel thought to have two walkers play each other in a game of Pong. Players compete on either of the two touch-screen controllers, and the game lasts as long as the light takes to change.

Unfortunately, Streetpong is only a concept, as the demonstration video was made using special effects and a green screen. While you won't be able to … Read more

My favorite high horsepower car under $50k

...the Ford Mustang Boss 302. Oh, I know, here come the Chevy and Mopar folks telling me I'm biased because I own a bunch of Fords, but the Fords I own were all made before Clinton was in office -- some before Nixon. So that's that.

I love the Boss because it moves well, sounds good, looks good, and is enjoyable to be in, not just be seen in. It's an absolute hammer on the road, does so without the lumpy, surging weirdness of turbos and blowers, and is just this side of too wild for daily … Read more

Cooley's Logbook: 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1

I came away from the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 with the impression of slightly unrefined brawn. Unlike the Mustang Shelby GT500, which is almost delicate in its handling, the Camaro is sort of a raw thing. It shudders and bangs when you start it, doesn't finesse the road surface -- and ride quality suffers a bit with that -- and has no fussy LCD-based cabin tech. It really feels close to a track car that was smoothed over enough for road use, just what Chevy had in mind. … Read more

2014 Mazda Mazda6 sedan teased in photo, videos

We knew that the handsome Mazda Takeri concept that debuted at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show was an indicator of the direction that Mazda would be taking with its Mazda6 sedan. Now, after a handful of teaser videos released to YouTube, the automaker has finally given us a clear look at exactly how close the concept is to production with a handful of photos of the production 2014 Mazda6's front end.

The 2014 Mazda6 will be the third model in the automaker's lineup to wear the SkyActiv badge and to be powered by the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G direct-injected … Read more

How a Tesla Model S gets made (video)

You may not be one of the lucky ones picking up keys to a Tesla Model S this week, but at least you can watch how each of the electric sedans gets made.

Tesla uploaded to YouTube a "behind-the-scenes" video of the Model S assembly process in advance of the vehicle's delivery start date. The 2-minute video shows the electric sedan being built by uniformed plant workers at the company's Fremont, Calif., manufacturing facility.

Customer deliveries of the electric vehicle will begin on Friday, as will customer test-drives. So far, two are in the hands of … Read more
