New iPhone 5S photos reportedly surface

MacRumors claims new photos allegedly of the iPhone 5S show a tweaked rear shell and the phone's internals.

The only really notable change from earlier peeks that the photos reveal of the iPhone 5S rear shell (at bottom) is a larger LED flash.

Note that alleged iPhone 5S rear shell images have appeared as far back as December of last year.

The iPhone 5S -- a device that's widely rumored and expected, though Apple has said zilch about such a product -- is also expected to boast a higher-resolution camera. Earlier reports have indicated that it may sport … Read more

iPad Mini Retina's display is a moving target: Here's why

Exactly when Apple's Retina version of the iPad Mini will appear isn't easy to predict. That's because display suppliers' plans change -- sometimes frustratingly often.

By all accounts, the Retina Display slated for a future version of iPad Mini is really hard to make. NPD DisplaySearch, IHS iSuppli, and Citi Research have all made this case.

NPD DisplaySearch was one of the first to proffer a timeframe for the 2,048x1,536 resolution 7.9-inch display. Production of the display was originally thought to begin in July. (And, remember, this is the display only not the tablet … Read more

Redesigned iPad Mini may arrive before Retina: DisplaySearch

A slimmer iPad Mini may arrive before the Retina version, according to a report Tuesday from NPD DisplaySearch. A 9.7-inch iPad with a future A7 processor may also be on the way.

The next Mini, due in the second half sometime, will sport a 1,024x768 display (like the current version) but get a processor upgrade to the A6 from the A5 that's in the Mini today, said NPD DisplaySearch in blog post today.

"The new iPad mini will continue to use a 7.9-inch display with a 1024×768 resolution, but it will use the … Read more

One reason Apple is hard to beat

Apple products aren't perfect, but they get a lot closer than most.

One reason for Apple's success can be summed up nicely in the 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina.

At first blush, it seems uncharacteristically pedestrian and unrefined for an Apple product. It doesn't have the usual Apple panache or design boldness. And it's thicker -- despite being smaller -- than the 15.4-inch Pro Retina. … Read more

IHS sees iPad Mini Retina display production in Q3

Display panels for the iPad Mini Retina should begin leaving the factory in the coming months, according to market researcher IHS iSuppli, echoing recent comments from other analysts.

Panel production for the high-resolution Mini will be "less than 3 million" units in the third quarter, Sweta Dash, senior director of LCD research at IHS iSuppli, told CNET.

And that means Apple's next small tablet should follow sooner -- or later. "We see it coming in the second half," Dash said. "The challenges [display makers] face are the [production] yield rates. And being able to … Read more

Here comes Google's next-gen Nexus 7, says IHS

Google may get its second-generation small tablet into consumers' hands before Apple does.

Market researcher IHS told CNET that Japan Display Inc. and AUO are expected to make the display for the next-gen Nexus 7, while Quanta will make the tablet itself.

"As far as I know, JDI and AUO didn't start to supply this panel to Quanta yet. However, they are saying it will start from June and July," Ricky Park, who heads research for TV, Tablet, Monitor and Notebooks display at IHS, told CNET. He is based in South Korea.

Apple looking at 5.7-inch iPhone, claims report

Apple is exploring iPhones as large as 5.7 inches, as it feels the heat from large-screen rivals, according to Reuters.

The company is considering the introduction of "at least two bigger iPhones next year," the report said.

One could sport a 4.7-inch screen and the other a 5.7-incher, Reuters said, citing sources in the Asia supply chain.

"Suppliers have been approached with plans for the larger screens," the report claimed, adding that the move is "still under discussion."

The motive appears to be a growing need to respond to large-screen smartphones … Read more

Why the MacBook Air didn't get a Retina display

Love that battery life in the new MacBook Air? Well, that's one reason Apple didn't go Retina this time around, according to an analyst.

The iPhone, the iPad, and the MacBook Pro all have Retina displays, why not the MacBook Air? Power consumption is probably the most important factor, according to Sweta Dash, senior director of display research & strategy at IHS.

"Apple almost doubled the battery life [with the new MacBook Air]. You can't do that with a Retina display" in an ultrathin laptop like the Air, she said.

Bigger iPhone 6 coming; iPad Mini Retina delayed, Citi says

A big-screen iPhone 6 should show up next year while the highly anticipated iPad Mini Retina may be delayed until the fourth quarter, according to Citi Research.

In a research note to investors Friday, Citi began by saying that production of the upcoming iPhone 5S "has been delayed by two to four weeks."

The note continued. "And while this does not preclude a September iPhone 5S launch date, we suspect volumes in September may consequently be challenged," Citi's Glen Yeung wrote, citing "our field work in the hardware supply chain."

Hon Hai to open display R&D center in Japan

Hon Hai is trying to expand beyond its role as a parts supplier to tech companies by devoting more research into display panels.

The company announced today that it will set up a new R&D center in Japan to focus on display and touch panels, according to Reuters. Any new technologies created at the center will be used for consumer, commercial, and medical products, Hon Hai said.

The new Japanese center will mark the company's third R&D facility in Asia, following one in Taiwan and another in China. Hon Hai said it plans to consolidate … Read more
