Windows Phone 8 one step closer to 1080p support -- report

Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 operating system might soon support 1080p resolution, leaked file information in Visual Studio 2013 suggests.

Former Nokia and Microsoft engineer Justin Angel tweeted out on Monday an image of Visual Studio 2013. The image showed Windows Phone 8 emulator files containing 1080p resolution of 1,920 x 1,080.

Microsoft's mobile operating system supports 720p resolution, as well as WVGA and WXGA. Full 1080p support, however, has been sorely lacking from the operating system. The resolution is available on several Android handsets.

I remember when the first BMW 320i hit U.S. shores when I was in high school. It forever changed my idea of what a sporty car could and should be, and did the same for much of the world's car-buying public. Today's 1 Series is the nearest thing to the 320i, and I approached it that way when we got our hands on a 135is on the road and on the track. Turns out it may be BMW'… Read more

Nearly half of smartphones sold in Europe hail from Samsung

Android is flying high in Europe, due mainly to the "relentless" popularity of Samsung's smartphone line, according to a new report.

The research firm found that Samsung helped lift Android to a 70.4 percent share of the key European markets, Germany, the U.K., France, Italy, and Spain. BlackBerry pleads for patience after brutal quarter

BlackBerry's "solid ground" just got shakier.

The company on Friday posted a loss in its fiscal first quarter, whereas analysts had projected at profit. Compounding the negativity was the eventual disclosure that it only sold 2.7 million BlackBerry 10 devices in the quarter and saw its subscriber base fall by 4 million to 72 million.

It was a bad day for BlackBerry all around. The surprising and disappointing numbers underscore the continued challenges the company faces as it continues its slow efforts for a recovery. But with losses expected to continue piling up, some are wondering … Read more

Uh-oh: BlackBerry shipped just 2.7M BB10 devices last quarter

BlackBerry sold a humbling 2.7 million BlackBerry 10 devices in its fiscal first quarter.

The company disclosed on a conference call Friday that 40 percent of the 6.8 million total BlackBerrys it sold in the period, which ended June 1, ran on its much-ballyhooed next-generation platform.

That's a number that most on Wall Street regarded as disappointing. Sanford Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu, for instance, had expected sales of 3 million units.

The sales figure likely represents the number of units sold to carriers, or the "ship in" figure. It's unclear what the "sell … Read more
