Apple to report first-quarter earnings on January 23

Apple said today that it will announce its fiscal first-quarter financial results on January 23.

The quarter is typically Apple's strongest, fueled by strong sales of the company's products during the lucrative holiday shopping season.

When announcing its fourth-quarter results last October, Apple said it expected revenue of $52 billion and projected earnings of $11.75 per share for its first quarter of 2013. Wall Street's expecting Apple to beat that with $54.5 billion in revenue, on earnings of $13.32 per share.

Apple wins patent for new way to send power to homes

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a patent for a new way to supply power to a home through the use of an "intelligent power-enabled communications port."

The inventor was Tony Fadell, a key executive who worked for Apple on the iPod and iPhone, until leaving to found Nest, a company that makes a 'smart thermostat,' the idea being that it will be able to plug in to "the Internet of things."

Judge decides to keep Samsung sales data unsealed

U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh has denied Samsung's request to keep its phone and device sales data out of the public's eye.

According to Bloomberg, which obtained a copy of an order filed earlier this week, Koh decided that Samsung must file and cannot seal an exhibit detailing total units sold on certain Samsung products. The products included in that exhibit, as well as the span of time in which the sales were registered, were not disclosed in Koh's order.

Apple applies for patent on 'active stylus' technology

Apple has filed for a patent that the company says, improves the overall functionality of a stylus.

Dubbed "Active Stylus," the technology describes a way in which a stylus, outfitted with an electrode at the tip, can interact with a "capacitive touch sensor panel" and allow users to tap around on menus, buttons, and text fields. The technology doesn't necessarily reinvent the stylus -- it is still handheld and functions just as today's styli do -- but it attempts to improve accuracy while maintaining costs.

Apple's Tim Cook sees his 2012 pay fall 99 percent

Apple CEO Tim Cook received only $4.2 million in compensation this year.

A proxy statement Apple filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission revealed Cook's base salary as $1.3 million with non-cash compensation making up the rest.

In contrast, Cook was given $378 million in overall compensation last year and $59 million the previous year. But the lower total compensation is all part of a plan.

The attention brought to bear on the labor practices of Apple's manufacturers and suppliers in China may be starting to create real, positive change in the electronics industry, says an article published this evening in The New York Times.

Apple received a patent for connectors use to replace or remove SIM cards in mobile devices.

The patent covers connectors that allow for multiple methods of inserting a SIM card, including the "plunger system," in which a user pushes on a plunger rod to eject the SIM card. The patent was first identified by Patently Apple.
