Primus frontman Les Claypool and M.I.R.V. guitarist Bryan Kehoe were jamming around the campfire one night. Claypool was suddenly inspired by the country music forced on him as a child -- Johnny Horton, Jerry Reed, and Vernon Dalhart -- and started playing his bass in a "Luther Perkins dig digga dang, dig digga dang" while Kehoe accompanied on guitar. They tested various songs, from obvious choices like Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans" and Primus' own "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" to less likely candidates such as Alice in … Read more
Gary Numan is well aware that most Americans know him only for his "Cars" single. It's his only US hit, charting at No. 9 back in 1980. But when people call the electro pioneer a one-hit wonder, it drives me crazy. If "Down in the Park," "Are 'Friends' Electric?" "Me! I Disconnect From You," and "You Are in My Vision" (with Tubeway Army), "I Die: You Die," and "We Take Mystery (To Bed)" didn't chart in the US, it's not for lack of … Read more
DreamWorks' "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" is based on the "Peabody's Improbable History" segment that appeared in the classic "Rocky and Bullwinkle Show" cartoon. The movie follows dog father Mr. Peabody and his biped boy Sherman in a race through time to repair a hole in the universe that jeopardizes the entire space-time continuum. "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" features the voices of Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Stephen Colbert, and Allison Janney; state-of-the-art CG animation and 3D; a great score by Danny Elfman; and a smart storyline that should charm children and parents … Read more
As the debris settled from the explosive "Mob Wives: New Blood" season finale, which aired on VH1 February 27, viewers were left wondering who'd return next season. But if this photo on the show's Facebook page is any indication, all five wives, including series peacekeeper Big Ang will be back for season five. Angela Raiola is Brooklyn born, a single mother of two, and a former Mafia moll, and she also appears on spin-off "Miami Monkey." Bing Ang talked to me about the shows, the drama, representing Italians, glorifying the Mob, and her favorite … Read more
Actor Jonathan Kite is a far cry from Oleg, the bawdy Ukrainian cook he plays on CBS sitcom "2 Broke Girls." He's US-born, more travel-crazed than sex-crazed, and doesn't deliver bawdy one-liners in his daily life. Kite also lends his voice to animated series "Black Dynamite" on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, and after making stand-up comedy a weekend hobby, has become sought after for his impressions of Vince Vaughn, Tom Hanks, Seth Rogen, Liam Neeson, and Robert Downey Jr.
How do you account for the success of "2 Broke Girls"? I … Read more
BARCELONA, Spain -- If anything can keep the good ship BlackBerry sailing, it's BBM. John Sims is the man charged with taking this slice of the BlackBerry pie and make it do two things -- grow and make money. He's been in the role just two short months, but speaking with CNET on the last day of Mobile World Congress 2014, he has a lot of big plans on both accounts.Full CNET coverage of the 2014 Mobile World Congress
"Clearly, in the longer term, we have to monetize that investment in BBM," said Sims. "… Read more
BARCELONA, Spain -- The Mobile World Congress 2014 tablet lineup was filled with over-sized phones, undersized "tablets", and tablet that knew exactly what it was. There's a palpable feeling coming out of the show that tablet makers are having difficulty deciding what next to do with them.
Tablet phones Tablet phones aren't a thing in the US, but if the showing at MWC is anything to go by, countries outside the states don't appear to have a problem with them as this year they were more ubiquitous than ever before. The HP Slate 7 VoiceTab, … Read more
Like at any technology show, the biggest product releases of Mobile World Congress dropped in the first couple of days. But the latter days of an event remain just as interesting. You actually have time (well, a few minutes anyway) to roam the show floor to find hidden gems and underdog products, and you can dig up a few juicy scoops. All of that is just what happened on day 3 of the world's biggest wireless show.
The return of BlackBerry? By now you may have forgotten about BlackBerry, but the former smartphone powerhouse showed up in Barcelona with … Read more
BARCELONA, Spain -- As a devout user of Futuremark's mobile 3D benchmark, 3DMark, it brought a smile to my face to see two new benchmark demoed at Mobile World Congress 2014. Each are coming later this year to Android, iOS, and Windows RT.
The first is a new workload for 3DMark, the company's mobile benchmark for testing a device's 3D graphics prowess. The second is a version of PCMark for mobile. Which is more of an overall system test.
The new 3DMark workload is coming in April, while the PCMark is currently slated to hit in June … Read more
