Get an Asus 11.6-inch touch-screen laptop for $299.99

I'm starting to rethink this whole touch-screen thing.

In the past I've come down on the "meh" side of touch-screen laptops, feeling like it doesn't really add anything to the Windows experience. Nice, sure, but not really necessary.

Then, over the weekend, I was gathered around my laptop with my sister, brother-in-law, and other family members, looking at listings for rescue dogs. (Yeah, we're adopting.) And as everyone congregated, to a person they reached for the screen and tried to make the page scroll.

After I yelled at them to "stop getting fingerprints … Read more

Five-deal Friday: Dirt-cheap earphones, Blu-ray, projector, and more!

After a week pockmarked with unfortunately timed sellouts, I want to send you into your weekend with enough deals to make your wallet beg for mercy.

1. The cheapest Blu-ray player ever. We've been rewatching "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy around these parts, and I just upgraded from the DVDs I'd purchased years ago to the Blu-ray editions. No. Contest. If you want the best picture and sound, by a mile, there's still nothing better.

For a limited time, and while supplies last, Newegg has the refurbished Magnavox MBP5320 Blu-ray player with Wi-Fi for $19.99 shipped. … Read more

Get an Asus Zenbook Prime 13.3-inch ultrabook for $699

I've found that sometimes -- sometimes -- it's worth spending a little extra.

For example, when I decided to buy an ultrabook a couple months back, I opted for the cheapest model I could find -- and ended up regretting a few things. It wasn't as thin or light as I would have liked, and its hybrid hard drive didn't blow me away with its performance.

Thankfully, you can now get a reasonably priced model without compromises. For a limited time, and while supplies last, "adoramacamera" (via eBay) has the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31ADH51 13.3-inch Ultrabook for $699 shipped. … Read more

Samsung goes big with Windows 8-powered Ativ line

The Ativ name may be silly, but Samsung Electronics is betting heavily on it as the namesake for anything related to Windows.

In a showcase Thursday that featured a slew of products, Samsung's Ativ line played a central role. Ativ has become the umbrella brand that includes laptops, tablets, all-in-ones, and smartphones, and some of the devices were on display.

Samsung is hoping history repeats itself with Ativ. It previously poured its resources into developing the Galaxy brand for anything associated with Android, and its flagship Galaxy S line of smartphones is a smash hit, with the Galaxy name … Read more

Get an Acer 15.6-inch touch-screen laptop for $469.99

Sorry for the confusion with yesterday's OBi100 deal. First there was a link boo-boo, then the product sold out. But don't worry: even at the usual price of $39.99, that's a great landline alternative. And it'll be back in stock before long, I'm sure.

Much as I'm loving ultrathin, ultralight ultrabooks these days, there's still a place in the world for a laptop with a roomy screen, DVD drive, and other desktop-friendly features. (That DVD drive in particular will prove important when you read about the sweet deal I'm writing for MarketplaceRead more

Find a stolen laptop with free LockItTight service

Recently I splurged on a Samsung Series 9 Ultrabook, which I absolutely love. It's a svelte, speedy marvel of modern computing, and almost certainly my favorite laptop of all time.

Which is why I'm especially fearful of losing it. Laptop thieves are everywhere. If they're not breaking into your car or home, they're snatching and grabbing from offices, coffee shops, airport security lines, and so on.

Arguably the only thing worse than your laptop getting stolen is knowing there's no way to get it back. After all, it's not like it can "phone … Read more

'Activation lock' to tighten iOS security

Apple may not be able to do anything to stop a mugger from stealing your iPhone, but changes in iOS 7 will prevent the thief from trying to sell the phone as new.

At its Worldwide Developers Conference here on Monday, Apple unveiled several security enhancements. Activation Lock is the most interesting. Though the company didn't go deep into detail on the new feature, Apple's head of Mac software engineering, Craig Federighi, said the feature prevents unauthorized resetting of an iPhone or iPad.

Basically, if the Find My Phone tracking utility has been deactivated, or if the phone … Read more

Safari for iOS to go full-screen

While Apple's updates to Safari for OS X Mavericks are more about keeping up with the Joneses, Safari for iOS 7 looks to forge new ground by making the browser look and feel more like the operating system.

Safari for iOS 7 features a nearly chrome-less interface ("chrome" refers to the visible interface portions of software), a new tab view, fewer restrictions on tabs, and iCloud Keychain integration, Apple announced at its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday.

By default, the iOS 7 Safari is set to what looks like full-screen mode. With the browser's chrome mostly … Read more
