Honda commercial pays homage to 'Tron'

There are some science fiction movies that you just have to love, no matter how awful they are. "Tron" is one of them. (Can you believe it was made a quarter of a century ago?) PSFK has been kind enough to post a YouTube clip of what I think is a very apt homage to the Disney proto-cyber classic on the part of Honda:

Is EZTakes a movie download service or a DVD rental company?

At the Digital Living Room conference today, several entrepreneurs pitched their home entertainment and networking products.

First up was EZTakes, a movie download service. It's unique because its pitch is based on archaic technology: DVDs. Like a few other services, it has a few content deals with studios and will let you download movies to your PC. Its library of 1,400 movies is not terrible, but certainly not comprehensive either.

EZTakes' difference is that its interface makes it easy for you to press your own DVDs, so you can then play them in your living room. The company … Read more

Freaking awesome 'Big Lebowski' tribute, Wii-style

One of the Wii features that people have been buzzing about has been the "Mii channel," the ability to create avatars that can look (to an extent) like whatever you want. Stephen Colbert used this to his advantage in a recent episode of "The Colbert Report" when he created a boxing match between Mii versions of himself and Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi. But I think the creative-Mii-use award goes to the guy at GameTrailers who created a Mii version of the entire first scene of the cult film "The Big Lebowski." The creation of … Read more

Play Tom Cruise on your cell phone

Way back before Tom Cruise became best-known for kidnapping impressionable young actresses and jumping on couches, he did this thing called acting. One of his more famous movies, Top Gun, is about to turn 20, and to mark this auspicious occasion, Hands-On Mobile is releasing Top Gun: Gulf Crisis (with the Gulf added, of course, to give the '80s characters a modern-day feel).

The game follows the Top Gun and Top Gun II mobile titles. The latest installment of the air combat simulator lets players be Iceman or Maverick as they take the controls of an F-14 Tomcat (not to … Read more

Knover: Where Jane Austen meets Jon Bon Jovi

Who knew there is a link between Socrates and John O'Hurley from Dancing with the Stars?

Knover, a recently launched search site, is an attempt to ferret out relationships between noted personalities, living or dead, and organizations or concepts. Type in a name, and it will likely turn up a picture of the person, a small biography, and a list of people connected with the individual.

The company has files on 16,000 personalities at the moment and hopes to expand it to 100,000 in a year or so. It's similar in a lot of ways to … Read more

Xbox Live--Microsoft lives

They're baaa-aack. Actually, they never left. In recent years the mainstream media has often dismissed Microsoft as old news, offering headlines about its decline that have focused on Bill Gates' departure, Vista delays, Internet Explorer bugs and Google, Google, Google.

Yet if there's one thing we've learned about the battle-hardened veterans of Redmond--declining or otherwise--it's never count them out. Witness the news about TV and movie downloads through Xbox Live, including high-definition shows. Microsoft has long understood the potential for an uber-device to take over all digital home entertainment, from games and Web browsing to television … Read more

A screen that's 27 by 15 feet--'nuff said

We're hesitant even to post this so-called world's largest seamless display, only because that claim seems to be made every other day. But, hey, we all like looking at huge screens, don't we? And this one adds "highest resolution" to the category, for the record. Apparently the work of two computer engineers, this monstrosity measures a full 27 feet across and 15 feet high (not typos). "This mammoth display is capable of displaying photographs and video in 60 million pixel, courtesy of 20 networked PCs that are equipped with a couple of graphic cards … Read more

Gomban gyldan! 'Beowulf' coming in 3D

OK, maybe it was the translation we were reading, but slogging through "Beowulf"--all thousands upon thousands of lines of it--does not stand out as one of the more engaging experiences of my sophomore year of high school. Given my unfond memories of the ninth century epic poem, I'm not sure I'm game for an immersive version. Then again, hearing that Robert Zemeckis' upcoming digitally enhanced live-action "Beowulf" will premiere in REAL D and other large-format 3D theaters might be just what I need to rethink my resistance to the Geats and Grendel.

No 'Halo' effect for Jackson's salary

What's this? A pay dispute in Hollywood? As unbelievable as it might seem, plans to produce Microsoft's video game "Halo" as a feature film with Fox and Universal have fallen through over--of all things--money.

Universal, on behalf of both studios, apparently asked would-be producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh to take a pay cut to curb production costs already estimated at $145 million, according to their representative Ken Kamins, in a Variety interview. Microsoft pretty much agreed with Kamins' characterization, and said in a statement on "Halo" that it is already in talks with … Read more

'Star Trek' movies: Which is best?

While watching "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan" last night for the hundredth time, I thought to myself: What is the best "Star Trek" film of all time?

I know there is no technical way to gauge a movie's inherent worth, but I figure the box office reflects some sort of viewer opinion. According to worldwide gross box-office figures, "Star Trek: First Contact" has the highest sales in the 10-part saga, scoring $146 million.

Since this film was made in the '90s, there may be some inflation at play. But let's face … Read more
