Is good, compact sound important enough to you that you'd opt to buy an iPod sound system that looks like a totally freaky space monster? I mean, I don't really mind it all that much, but there are a few other bloggers at Crave who get pretty paranoid about any kind of gadgets that might be remotely frightening. Consequently, I'm very well aware that some people might not really want this $120-ish iPod dock from iWoofer, even if it has a built-in subwoofer. Because it's scary. Really scary.

Our feelings about student gear with external speakers should be fairly clear by now, so one can image how we reacted upon learning of a binder that comes with stereo satellites, as seen on Electronista. It's about time that Sony acknowledged reality. Rather than acting as though it's still king of the hill in entertainment hardware, the proprietary-obsessed company has finally broken down and released an iPod docking station (only a few years late, but no one's really counting anymore).

The speaker station even has the official blessing of Apple, according to Electronista, so compatibility with all iPod models should be ensured. There's just one problem--the price. At $250, this has about as much of a chance of succeeding as the Walkman's transition from CDs to MP3s.

Enough already. Why is it that some people insist on "sharing" their music with the rest of world--whether we like it or not--when today's headphones offer a far superior listening experience? We've seen everything from messenger bags to bowling bags with built-in speakers, and now we have a new backpack that will surely contribute its share of noise pollution.

Scullcandy's "Link" backpack has speakers embedded in its straps for music or--worse, as OhGizmo notes correctly--a cell phone conversation. We've got to get started building that bunker.

It was bound to happen. With all manner of bags and cases coming with built-in speakers these days, why not a purse?
