The gift of LIFI: Panasonic projection TVs don't burn out

Panasonic's new line of LCD projection TVs are featuring a new technology--called LIFI--that Panasonic is claiming will eliminate the need for lamp replacement. Since today's LCD and DLP projection sets often need to have their bulb replaced after 3-5 years--and the bulbs cost several hundred dollars--LIFI technology could get remove one of the major drawbacks to projection TVs. LG announces a bundle of new LCDs

LG has announced a whole slew of new LCDs for 2007 at CES, 20 models in all. The press release is light on details--we didn't learn any pricing or availability--but we did get a basic outline of what each new series will have.

The LC7 series has screen sizes ranging from 26 to 47 inches. The 47-inch model is a 1080p set, but LG didn't reveal the native resolutions of the others. LG says there will be at least two HDMI inputs on every LCD larger than 26 inches, so that means every set in the LC7 series … Read more

Dell announces a new 27-inch LCD monitor--and we've already tested it

This morning at CES, Dell announced its new 27-inch LCD monitor, the Dell UltraSharp 2707WFP. We were lucky to get our hands on an early review sample, and Matthew Wood from CNET Labs has already been able to do a lot of hands-on testing. We'll be following up with a full review of the 2707WFP--with a more rigorous performance analysis--after CES, but we've done enough testing to give some substantial first impressions. SXRD, OLED, LCD: Sony's alphabet soup of TV prototypes

Sony's gargantuan booth at CES 2007 covers a lot of real estate, and it's always packed full of onlookers soaking up the sights and sounds. But the flashy booth hides a dirty little secret: Aside from a handful of headline products, very few of the devices on display are actually new. HP ditching DLP TVs for flat-panel sets

HP announced its new lineup of HDTVs for 2007, and the biggest news is probably that its well-received DLP (digital light processing) rear-projection sets aren't being refreshed for the new year. Word is that the company will let stores sell through the DLPs still out there, but that's it. The focus for 2007 will be on flat-panel models. It's strange, considering that the company invested heavily in DLP technology.

Sharp shows off 108-inch LCD TV

It wouldn't be CES without some giant TVs that nobody can afford, and Sharp has done its part with a gigantic 108-inch LCD TV. The 1080p-resolution set measures 93.9 inches high by 52.9 inches wide, so you'll probably need a mansion to go along with your new TV. There's not much more to say except that, unlike many of the giant TVs that are unveiled, Sharp announced at its press conference that this set actually will be available to consumers.

Samsung glosses over LCD lineup

Every year at CES it seems like more and more manufacturers release less and less information about their coolest products. Sure, I realize that the pricing, availability, and specs given are usually "preliminary" anyway, but any information is better than none. Take Samsung's higher-end flat-panel LCD lineup for 2007. Its three models, the 52-inch LN-T5265F, the 46-inch LN-T4665F, and the 40-inch LN-T4065F, all offer HDMI 1.3, 1080p (1,920x1,080) native resolution, a more-unbelievable-than-usual 12,000:1 contrast ratio, and "chrome accents and glossy black finish to accentuate any home theater." Sharp unveils four new lines of Aquos LCDs

Sharp's one of the biggest players in flat-panel LCD HDTVs, and today it announced four new series of the popular Aquos LCDs for 2007. While the 108-inch LCD might have stolen the show at Sharp's press conference, these four Aquos product lines will be of greater interest to anyone actually looking to buy a TV this year.
