iPhone 5 preorders indicate hot demand

Friday's tech news roundup didn't plan ahead:

A rush of iPhone 5 preorders online have pushed back shipping dates at Apple and wireless carriers for at least two weeks. Some stores, like Wal-Mart and Target, are also offering iPhone 5 preorders for in-store pickup. The initial supply of iPhones for Apple preorders went in less than an hour, which is much faster than years prior. It shows that either demand is way up for this model, or Apple didn't have as many available for the preorder crowd (or a mix of both). We won't know for … Read more

AT&T, Verizon push back iPhone 5 ship dates

Verizon Wireless and AT&T have pushed back shipment dates on iPhone 5 as pre-orders continue to pile up.

AT&T's Web site says every configuration of the iPhone 5 will ship in 14 to 21 business days, which means some orders could arrive as late as October. Verizon says the phone will be delivered on September 28.

The shipment delays follow similar messages found on Apple's own Web site. They underscore the continued demand and appeal of the iPhone 5, even if some critics have considered it a disappointing upgrade.

iPhone 5 may need third antenna for simultaneous voice-data

The ghost of Apple's iPhone 4 "antennagate" looks to be haunting the iPhone 5.

The reason simultaneous voice and data capability on 4G LTE isn't possible on Sprint and Verizon simply seems to be the new device's hardware.

CNET reported earlier today that the iPhone 5 models for both Verizon and Sprint don't support data-use and voice simultaneously while on 4G LTE networks -- meaning that if users make a voice call, they'll also need to be on Wi-Fi to pull data inside their apps, including the Safari Web browser. AT&T … Read more

Verizon, Sprint: iPhone 5 can't do voice plus data on 4G LTE

It appears that AT&T will still have an edge on rival carriers when it comes to one key iPhone 5 feature.

The models for both Verizon and Sprint won't let you do other data-hungry tasks while making a phone call on 4G LTE networks. When you're making a voice call on either of the two networks, you'll need to be on Wi-Fi if you want to pull data inside apps, including the Safari Web browser.

"The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network, while … Read more

Isis mobile payment service hits snag, delays trial run

Isis won't be launching its mobile payment trials at the end of summer.

Isis, which is a joint venture between Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and T-Mobile USA, told CNET today that it was delaying the start of its trials, which were scheduled to start this month in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Austin, Texas.

Isis is one of several parties attempting to roll out a broader system of mobile payments, which would enable you to purchase goods and services by waving a smartphone at a cash register, subway turnstile, or inside a taxi. Unlike a higher profile launch … Read more

Verizon Wireless to include FaceTime on all data plans

Apple's iOS 6 will allow iPhone users to make FaceTime calls over a cellular network, and Verizon Wireless doesn't want to limit the video-calling feature.

The nation's largest carrier confirmed this evening that will make the data-intensive app available on all its data plans at no additional charge, including those still on unlimited data plans. The move was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Previously operational only on Wi-Fi networks, the app will work on cellular networks when the update to Apple's operating system is released on September 19.

The offering stands in contrast to … Read more

Verizon debuts security app to battle malware on Android

There's been a lot of news lately on how Android mobile devices are malware's new favorite victims. While Google has been working to beef up security for its mobile OS, wireless carriers are also pitching in.

Verizon announced the launch of its McAfee "Mobile Security" app for Android today, which aims to help subscribers protect stored data on their smartphones. More specifically the paid version of the app lets users remotely locate, alarm, lock, and wipe data from their device.

"While most consumers with smartphones understand they are carrying around the functions of a computer, … Read more
