Smartphone and TV sales trim losses for LG

LG Electronics was hit by a drop in revenue and a net loss for its fourth quarter, but that loss was lower than a year ago thanks to strong demand for smartphones and TVs.

For the quarter ended in December, sales dipped 6 percent, while the net loss narrowed to 111.6 billion won ($99 million), compared with a loss of 256.4 billion won in 2010's final quarter. Operating profits hit the black, jumping to 23 billion won ($20.5 million), compared with a loss of 32 billion won in the prior year's quarter.

LG Optimus LTE smartphone hits 1 million in sales

LG's Optimus LTE phone is proving to be a hot seller around the world, racking up more than 1 million unit sales.

Debuting in South Korea last October, the phone grabbed sales of 600,000 units in its native country during the first three months.

From there, the Optimus LTE traveled to Japan to capture sales of 8,500 units in its first day, then to Canada, and finally to the U.S. where it was rebranded the LG Nitro HD, altogether pulling in more than 400,000 in additional sales to take in a cool million.

LG Optimus 3D 2 a second stab at the third dimension

Looks like LG is having another go at making a 3D phone. The follow-up to last year's Optimus 3D has leaked online and is set to offer another round of glasses-free three-dimensional kicks.

Pocketnow has acquired leaked images of the new phone (reportedly code-named the CX2), as well as a selection of specs. The exciting news is that the Optimus 3D 2 will reportedly be able to convert 2D material into 3D before firing it out of its 4.3-inch display, and into your eyes.

We have to admit, when we've seen 2D-to-3D conversion before (in 3D televisions, for example), it's never wound up looking particularly good. We'll reserve judgement until we've laid eyes on this phone for ourselves though.

LG Optimus 2 keeps it simple

A year after LG brought Android to the masses with its entry-level Optimus line, the company is doing the same with its new Optimus 2.

Though positioned as a successor device, the Optimus 2 barely improves on the earlier models. It runs Gingerbread (thankfully), but the feature set is decidedly conservative.

Hasbro accuses Asus of stealing Transformer Prime name

Hasbro is accusing Asus of hijacking one of its trademarks with the release of the Transformer Prime tablet.

The toymaker claimed in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles federal court last week that the electronics maker is creating confusion by blending the "Transformers" and Optimus Prime names. Hasbro said in a statement that Asus is counting on consumers associating the new tablet with children's toys to sell the Transformer Prime.

Details surfacing for successor to LG Revolution

If you thought Verizon Wireless was going to slow down on the high-end Android smartphones, you'd be wrong.

Based on recently leaked information, soon we should see an LG phone with 4G LTE connectivity and an HD display. Expected to be called the LG Spectrum, the smartphone should be the heir apparent to the Revolution which launched in mid-2011.

AT&T today introduced its next Android smartphone, the 4G LTE-capable LG Nitro HD.

Expected to arrive online and in stores on December 4 for $249.99, the LG Nitro HD boasts a 4.5-inch True HD AH-IPS display, a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, an 8-megapixel camera, and 4GB internal storage.
