100,000 free songs

Everyone loves big, round numbers, so when Download.com Music published its 100,000th song recently, we were quick to break out the champagne. Yeah, we admit it, we're suckers for celebrations. Still, there's no question that's a lot of songs--enough to push any iPod (or any sane music fan, for that matter) past its breaking point.

As though timed to coincide with the much-anticipated release of indie rock powerhouse The Arcade Fire's album release this week (it's a must-listen, by the way), Monday night's monthly NY Tech Meetup at Cooper Union featured a trio of Gotham-based start-ups devoted to spreading the buzz about independent music. USB gadget revives those dusty LPs

Those of us who hammered out high school papers on this doodad called a typewriter used to listen to these shiny black things called records. Sometimes we'd even have to hike 10 miles in the snow just to hear a little Joni Mitchell! Times were tough.
