Dialed In: 137: When it's not about the iPhone

Believe it or not, we manage to make it through a whole podcast without barely mentioning the iPhone! Sure, it comes up just for a second, but we spend the majority of the time discussing desserts that begin with the letter "H". If anyone at Google is listening, we're down to "Honeycake" or "Hamantash" for the next Android update beyond the forthcoming "Gingerbread" release.

Speaking of Android, we spend time in this episode talking about how Froyo looks on the HTC Evo 4G. Kent thinks it looks great, but no one … Read more

LG dLite sparkles up T-Mobile

T-Mobile announced the availability of the LG dLite Wednesday, making it the third LG handset in T-Mobile's stable (the other two are the Sentio and the GS-170).

The dLite is quite the attention-grabber, with programmable light effects, courtesy of color LEDs along its side and an interesting dot matrix display on the front. It has a 2.8-inch internal display, support for T-Mobile's 3G network, e-mail, and visual voicemail. It's available in bubblegum pink and electric blue for $50 after a mail-in rebate.

Intuitive puzzle handler

Gone are the days when completing a crossword puzzle meant hunkering over a folded newspaper or a puzzle book. You can still do crosswords that way, of course, but like everything else, they've also gone electronic. Across Lite is an easy-to-use crossword application that supports puzzles from some of the U.S.'s top newspapers, including The New York Times and Washington Post. The program retains a lot of the pen-and-paper experience of doing a crossword while offering a convenient electronic format.

If you've ever done a crossword before, and if you have even the most basic computer … Read more

TheWorld is a tab-happy, bubbly browser

TheWorld 3.1 is a Web browser based on the engine that powers Microsoft Internet Explorer. Like Internet Explorer 7 and 8, TheWorld has a multithreaded frame that is supposed to prevent window freezing.

The browser's default appearance is simple, yet it feels cluttered because its toolbar is packed with icons. Its user interface is similar to that of Internet Explorer 7 and 8 except for a few minor details. The icons are bubble-like and the top toolbar is on the right-hand side of the screen next to an extra option that lets users hide it. TheWorld also supports … Read more

LG and T-Mobile partner with Sentio, dLite, and GS170

As surprising as it may seem, T-Mobile has never had an LG phone on its network, at least until this summer. The companies' first-time collaboration will be marked by three new phones: the LG Sentio, LG dLite, and LG GS170. The Sentio and the dLite will have T-Mobile's Social Buzz, an app designed to give an easy view and access to favorite social-networking sites.

The LG Sentio appears to have a 3-inch touch-screen display, a virtual QWERTY keyboard, e-mail, messaging, 3G, GPS, a 3-megapixel camera, an MP3 player, and visual voicemail. The LG dLite has an interesting hidden matrix … Read more

Facebook turns off its 'Lite'

There was a lot of chatter about "Facebook Lite," a stripped-down version of the social network's profiles and home page, when it stumbled out of the gate last summer and was widely interpreted as a hit on Twitter. Facebook pitched it as a test for "countries where we are seeing lots of new users coming to Facebook for the first time and are looking to start off with a more simple experience."

Facebook confirmed Tuesday on its official "fan page" that it's ending the Facebook Lite project. "We're no longer … Read more

Auction action

For the casual eBay user, the options present within the eBay Web site itself are probably enough. More serious auction-addicts, however, need advanced tools for searching, monitoring auctions, and bidding. Prospector Lite supplies these tools in a well-designed, intuitive format.

Prospector Lite's interface is browserlike and intuitive, making it easy to navigate. Users can surf eBay just as they would in a regular Web browser, but Prospector Lite adds plenty of handy eBay-specific tools. Users can create complex searches that use a wide variety of different parameters; these searches are then saved in a handy tree format, allowing users … Read more

AT&T pushes quick-messaging phones

LAS VEGAS--AT&T execs said there is big opportunity in selling mid-range phones to consumers who think smartphones are too expensive and too complicated.

Executives talked about this new cell phone category they call "quick messaging devices" on Wednesday at an event at the CTIA tradeshow here.

What is a quick-messaging phone? Think the LG Neon and Samsung Propel. These are phones that don't have the processing power and functionality found in most smartphones, but they still offer data services, such as messaging, e-mail, and Web access. Most of these phones also have QWERTY keypads and/… Read more
