New images of Steve Jobs during Apple founder's early years

Starting in 1986, photojournalist Doug Menuez began taking photos of Steve Jobs, then in exile from Apple and working at his next startup, NeXt. Jobs was just one of the execs Menuez followed around as part of a 15-year chronicle of Silicon Valley during a formative era in its history. But the pictures never saw the light of day after Jobs had a change of heart.

Until now. The photos went up on display as part of the "Moscow Photobiennale: 'Fearless genius' inaugural exhibition."

HP increases job cuts to 29,000

Hewlett-Packard will cut more of its global staff than first planned, upping the figure from around 27,000 to 29,000 employees.

The world's largest computer maker said today in its

10-Q quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it will, "eliminate approximately 29,000 positions in connection with the 2012 Plan through fiscal year 2014."

HP said in May that it would cut 27,000 jobs -- roughly 8 percent of its global workforce -- and plow the $3 billion to $3.5 billion it says it will save into research and … Read more

Court OKs feds' e-book settlement with publishers

A federal court has approved a settlement agreement reached between the U.S. Department of Justice and three book publishers accused of conspiring with Apple to fix e-book prices.

The DOJ filed suit against Apple and five of the country's largest book publishers in April and accused the group of antitrust violations. Immediately after filing the complaint, the government announced that it had reached a settlement with three of the five accused publishers: Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, and Simon & Schuster (owned by CBS, parent company of CNET).

AngelList attacks another startup pain point: Legal fees

AngelList -- a booming site where angel investors find tech startups to back -- is rolling out a product today that should please a lot of would-be Mark Zuckerbergs and, in theory, worry a lot of lawyers.

Ultimately, it could help both.

The site, founded in early 2010 by entrepreneurs/angel investors Naval Ravikant and Babak Nivi, is now offering standardized online documents that will make it faster and cheaper for any of the thousands of startups on AngelList to close their first round of funding.

On the Apple campus, thinking different is worshipped. The company's core aspiration is to deliver startling breakthroughs, not me-too, products. Now Apple is calling upon its rivals to "think different," but for different reasons than creating breakthrough products.
