PS3 now jailbreakable via USB dongle?

A new hack is purportedly hitting the scene in a week or so that could let PS3 owners dump borrowed games onto the system's hard drive--or even an external drive--and play them. No optical discs, just straight gaming from an HD. Needless to say, this is a hack many users have been waiting for and one Sony has been trying to prevent.

The hack, which some are calling a jailbreak, similar to software that allows non-Apple-approved apps to run on the iPhone and iPad, comes in the form of a USB dongle called PS Jailbreak. When inserted into … Read more

Apple releases iOS patch to fix PDF security flaw

Apple has quickly released a patch for the recently uncovered security flaw with how Mobile Safari handles PDF files in iOS 4.0.1 and earlier for the iPod Touch and iPhone, and iOS 3.2.1 and earlier for the iPad.

The iPhone Dev Team uncovered the flaw and released software that took advantage of it to jailbreak iOS devices when you visit its Web site.

A week ago, CNET reported that Apple was preparing a fix, but there was no mention of when Apple would release it.

The update to fix this problem should now be available via … Read more

Watch streaming Netflix videos on your iPhone

Yo, Netflix! When are you going to give us an iPhone version of your awesome iPad app? You said it was coming "this summer." According to my calendar, August is just about half over.

Since I'm an impatient pup, I decided to follow Lifehacker's instructions for watching streaming Netflix videos on an iPhone. It took some doing, but it works--and I'm just a wee bit giddy with excitement.

First caveat: This hack requires you to have a jailbroken iPhone. The Netflix app is, arguably, the best justification yet to stage a jailbreak of your iPhone--though … Read more

New app brings Flash to jailbroken iPhones

An updated version of Frash, an app that permits the otherwise banned Adobe Flash technology on Apple mobile devices, has been released. At the moment, however, it's only capable of handling relatively basic Flash animations (including, for example, the cult-classic Flash cartoon "Trogdor the Burninator"). The device in question must also first be "jailbroken," or hacked to remove protections and restrictions put in place by the hardware or software manufacturer.

Comex, the development firm that created Frash as well as the JailbreakMe tool, initially launched the app in a limited test that was first only … Read more

The 404 638: Where it's cloudy with a chance of ultrasn0w (podcast)

The same group of hackers that exposed a flaw in the iPhone's mobile Safari browser last week just re-released an update to their popular ultrasn0w client that lets users jailbreak their iPhone 4 to use with any carrier regardless of contract.

There's plenty of reasons to jailbreak your iPhone, like using it as a Wi-Fi hotspot, chatting on FaceTime over 3G, making a phone call without the "help" of AT&T, and downloading apps not approved by Apple store, but before you break out of iJail, consider the stated fact that jailbreaking your iPhone will void the warranty.… Read more

Apple readies fix for iPhone browser security hole

After the iPhone Dev Team released the latest jailbreak software hack for the iPhone over the weekend, it became apparent that the way the jailbreak worked--via an iPhone's mobile Safari browser--that the phone has a security vulnerability when it comes to the way it loads PDF files from the Web.

On Wednesday an Apple spokeswoman said in a statement, "We're aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to … Read more
