HBO launches Netflix rival

Pay-TV juggernaut HBO has officially announced the launch of HBO Go, a video-streaming service.

Unless you are one of the 38 million cable subscribers who gets HBO or sister service Cinemax, HBO Go won't be offered to you, the company has said.

HBO Go provides subscribers Web access to the same movies HBO screens on cable TV--at no extra charge. This is the on-demand movie provider's attempt to hang on to subscribers during a down economy, as Netflix and other Web video services attract more and more consumers looking to reduce entertainment costs.

Time Warner teams up with Adobe: Will HBO.com go all Flash?

Time Warner and Adobe Systems announced on Monday a strategic and non-exclusive alliance wherein the two companies will work with one another to build DRM and Flash publishing into three of Time Warner's properties. Included in the alliance is Warner Bros. Entertainment, Turner Broadcasting System, and Home Box office.

Stalk your favorite TV characters (legally) with Whrrl

Location-based social network Whrrl has forged a rather odd partnership with content provider HBO to place various fictional characters from the show Entourage as real users on its network.

Events from the television show will end up as annotated items on Whrrl's user-generated map. You can subscribe to whichever of the characters you want, and each of their items go into your central friends feed along with regular users who are providing "real" ratings and locational bookmarks. What's in the future for Funny or Die?

Funny or Die, the comedy site co-founded by actor Will Ferrell, rose to fame a year ago with a wildly popular video called "The Landlord." Plans for the site are growing as fast as Ferrell's fro.

On Wednesday, the site snagged an equity investment from HBO. Funny or Die, which already had the backing of Sequoia Capital, also will also produce 10 half-hours of programming for HBO as part of the deal.
