Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer has spent plenty of time in the last few months telling the world that Microsoft was morphing from a software company to one that focuses on devices and services.

Google tweaks mobile search to deliver information quicker

Google introduced a pair of new features today intended to help speed mobile users' searches.

"When you're searching for information on the go, speed matters," Google software engineers Hiroshi Mizuno and Alex Fischer wrote in a company blog post explaining the features.

Starting today, mobile users will be able to use expandable site links to quickly access specific sections of certain sites, trimming the number of pages.

Google's Voice Search and the thirst for conversation

Google acquires Android mobile-data firm Behavio

Google has snapped up Behavio, the fledgling company behind Funf, the Android "open sensing" framework that aimed to provide better access to, and use of information from, smartphones using Google's mobile OS.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Behavio's most notable achievement is the Funf framework, which gathers vast amounts of data about people and their location by way of their phone. WhatsApp CEO: We're bigger than Twitter's 200M users

WhatsApp is bigger than Twitter, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum boasted today.

Koum, speaking at AllThingsD's mobile conference today, wouldn't talk about specific figures when it comes to usage, but he confirmed that the mobile messaging service topped Twitter's usage. Twitter declared in December that it had exceeded 200 million monthly users.

WhatsApp boasts an average of 8 billion inbound messages and 12 billion outbound messages a day, he said.

Google still wants Apple to use its maps, Eric Schmidt says

The Apple Maps fiasco may have died down, but Google still wants its mapping program to be default on iOS, said Google Chairman Eric Schmidt.

Schmidt, speaking today during an AllThingsD mobile conference, declined to say why Apple decided to go with its own mapping system rather than working with Google as it had in the past. But he said his company is still pushing Apple to use Google Maps as the primary navigation tool on iOS.

Eric Schmidt: Motorola's new products are 'phenomenal'

The Android handset market may be very competitive, but Motorola's new products are "phenomenal," said Google Chairman Eric Schmidt.

Schmidt, speaking today during the AllThingsD mobile conference in New York, declined to specify what devices Motorola is building but said people should think of the products as "phones plus."
