Xen now supports AMD Virtualization

Programmers released version 3.0.2 of the Xen virtualization software Thursday, adding support for a hardware assist called AMD-V coming in future Advanced Micro Devices processors. The feature makes it possible to run unmodified operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, even though Xen relies heavily on Linux.

Version 3.0.2, though only an update to the major changes that came when version 3 was released in December, is nevertheless something of a milestone. It's the version that will be the basis for the virtualization software that will ship with Novell's Suse Linux Enterprise Server, according to … Read more

VMware offers migration freebie

VMware, whose software lets a single x86 computer run multiple operating systems simultaneously, is offering its Physical to Virtual (P2V) migration tool free to customers who buy an on-site consulting service called the P2V Migrations Jumpstart.

The P2V tool lets a computer's configuration be moved from an ordinary server to VMware's virtual machine software foundation. One of VMware's competitors, SWsoft, added its own Virtuozzo P2V tool in August.

Virtual machine software, by letting a server gracefully run more tasks at once, can increase a computer's efficiency. VMware dominates the market for x86 servers, but also faces … Read more

The chipmaker had said it planned to reveal details by the end of March. On Monday, a company representative said the announcement is expected Wednesday, March 30. Microsoft and EMC's VMware subsidiary, which each have software that dovetails with the processor "virtualization" technology, will lend their support to AMD's technology, AMD said. The chipmaker also is working with the competing open-source Xen software project. … Read more
