The Venus de Milo of speakerdom

Beauty doesn't always need to be expensive. Well, not the most expensive, anyway.

They may not cost $1 million, but the "Signature Diamond" speakers from U.K.-based Bowers & Wilkins doesn't skimp on materials: These limited editions are sculpted in marble and have tweeters that use diamond crystals "to deliver a cleaner, purer sound," according to BornRich.

And compared with the "Grand Enigma" they're price is a drop in the ocean at $22,000. Each, of course.

Motorola goes for the gold (and diamonds)

Peter Aloisson had a hard act to follow: himself. After all, it's not every day that a designer is so inspired to come up with something like the "Diamond Crypto Smartphone," which went for a cool $1.3 million.

So rather than try to exceed his already-over-the-top standard, he apparently has decided to go for a broader market with the Motorola V3i "Stainless Steel Gold" handset. The phone still has plenty of diamonds--855, to be exact, weight 3.8 total carats--but it's far more reasonable in price: Just $10,000. And if you're … Read more

Phone of gold, diamond from the desert

Over-the-top phones are the province of no particular region, but this one is appropriate at least because it comes from a country that's immediately associated with luxury: the United Arab Emirates. Dubai-based Touchmate has created a mobile phone in gold or silver finish with a crown-jewel diamond from, of course, Swarovski.

Other than its casing, which features a floral pattern on the back, the "Diamond Cam Mobile" seems fairly ordinary with a 1.3-megapixel camera, color screen and 128MB of memory, according to Gearfuse. But Touchmate begs to differ, boasting that its TM-M800 handset is "the … Read more

The $2 million diamond wheels

After posting a recent item about a $150,000 gear shift knob, we didn't think we'd see an automotive accoutrement so egregious for awhile. Only a week later, however, BornRich has given us just that: A set of wheels totaling $2 million.

Like the aforementioned diamond Bentley knob, the Asanti wheels aren't items traditionally featured on a gadget blog but are simply too outrageous to pass up. This 34-inch set--which boasts 26,000 diamonds and 1,200 rubies--is touted as "the world's most expensive custom diamond wheels." We'll take their word for it.… Read more

The $150,000 gear shift knob

As luxury items or egregious excess appear to be the theme of the day, it seems fitting to include this gem from that icon of motoring wealth, the Bentley.

It's not a gadget per se, of course, but we just couldn't resist because this thing is so far over the top. Finished in white gold and 30 carats of diamonds, the knob costs $150,000--almost as much as the $165,000 Bentley Continental GT, as Luxist points out. As far as we know, it's the only shift knob that has its own Web site. But if … Read more

More fake diamonds, just because

We never thought we'd see competition for the diamond-studded "TrekStor i.Beat Organix Gold" but, unfortunately, we've been proven wrong once again. The "KVA P30" is another media player lined with diamonds, though in this case fake ones. So even though its cost and availability are unknown, we seriously doubt it will approach its rival's $20,000 price tag. It won't make up for its ersatz stones with higher-end features either: The player may have a 2.4-inch screen but can only store 1GB of video and audio, as BornRich says. But … Read more

We Crave the Wii laptop

Today I welcome Ryan Block, managing editor of Engadget! He shows us the Wii laptop, one of the best gaming mods I've ever seen. Then, of course, I dazzle him with yet another disco product (are there ever enough?), the Funk Fone. And you'll be dazzled blind by the Diamond Flower, a $24,000 mouse studded with, naturally, diamonds. Last but certainly not least is the Ergopod 500--a great contraption for people who need computer access while they're bedridden, but also a possible earthquake hazard. See you next week!

$24,000 mouse comes with warranty

The Swiss company Pat Says Now deserves attention just for its name, which always reminds us of Right Said Fred. (Who knew they were still around? We were sure they were a one-hit wonder.)

Anyway, Pat Says Now has drawn even more attention to itself with the "Diamond Flower," which it describes as "the world's most expensive computer mouse" at more than $24,000. We'd be afraid to make that claim, given all the insane bling on the personal technology market, but it does have 59 diamonds accenting an 18k white gold casing with … Read more
